It was just before midnight on Thursday, July 14 a full moon in the sky when we made our way to the Riviera Theatre. The streets were quiet, except for our chatter.
We walked down the street, then turned the corner at Main and Broadway. There they were - right off the movie screen: Professor McGonagall, Bellatrix Lestrange, Professor Trelawney and Hagrid. Where was my camera? Back at the office, of course.
It was the night of the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The Riviera had the 12:01 am showing, like many movie theatres across the country. Across the country? How about around the world!
We purchased our tickets and got a treat, then proceeded into the theatre. There he was not once, but twice Harry Potter. Now I really felt bad about not having my camera.
As the quartet of Harry Potter characters came into the theatre, hoots and hollers and applause went up from the crowd. They walked to the front of the theatre, made their way across and found seats in the center section.
There was a good crowd for the midnight show. I was number 81, and there were many that came in after. There were definitely more than 100 and they were all young. No doubt I was the oldest one in the theatre that night. But never mind. I had read all the books and wasn't about to pass up opening night of the final movie.
The kids chattered through the previews, checked cell phones and ate their popcorn. But when the movie began, the crowd got very quiet and the theatre remained quiet throughout.
The crowd emerged from the theatre after 2 am. We walked home and talked about the movie most of the way. Others climbed into vehicles, all talking like crazy. I don't know about the rest of them, but I was replaying scenes from the movie in my head for the next 24 hours.
Before we went to the movie, I got out the book and skimmed the last few chapters just to bring myself up to speed. It had been a while since I had seen Part 1 and even longer since I had read the book. I found a bookmark at the beginning of chapter 36. Do you think that I had not finished the book? Not likely.
We're sorry to see an end to Harry Potter, but we'll always have good memories. To get the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, you have to go to King' Cross Station, one of the main train stations to serve London, England. We were there on a trip to England. We stood at Platform 9 but of course we couldn't board the Hogwarts Express. The only time that scarlet steam engine appears is on the first day of September when it takes students to Hogwarts.
Thanks, J.K. Rowling, for providing interesting reading of books that lead to the scripts for the movies: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Year One at Hogwarts; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Year Two at Hogwarts; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Year Three at Hogwarts; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Year Four at Hogwarts; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Year Five at Hogwarts; Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Year Six at Hogwarts; and the finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
