Raising Awareness For Cerebral Palsy

September 22, 2011
Emmetsburg News

Letter to the Editor:

For the past twelve years the Palo Alto County 4-H County Council has been sponsoring a bike ride to raise money for the Pedal with Pete Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to raising money for the prevention and cure of cerebral palsy. On Sunday, Sept. 18, 22 riders dusted off their bikes and pedaled for a cure to raise over $700.00. Riders ranged in age from 13 to 61.

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological condition that can begin during pregnancy, labor, or even after birth, damaging the central nervous system. There is no single cause. Persons with CP may experience speech and learning difficulties, hearing problems, problems walking and using their hands, visual impairments and a variety of other neurological symptoms. It is not a disease. It is not contagious or progressive. Estimates indicate more than 600,000 persons in the United States have CP, and another 5,800 babies are born with CP each year.

On behalf of the 4-H County Council I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the individuals who gave donations and/or participated in our bike ride this year. Thanks also to the following businesses who gave prizes or cash donations: Dairy Queen, Graettinger Country Store, Knights Sports Network, Palo Alto Rockets 4-H Club, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, and Mindy's Miles. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, (signed) Julie Naig
