December 15, 2011
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

After a tough week on the mats last week, Coach Cody Alesch and the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Knights saw their fortunes improve despite a pair of losses in a double-duel on Tuesday.

The Knights would travel to Laurens on Tuesday to meet Alta-Aurelia and Laurens-Marathon/Sioux Central, but fell to Alta-Aurelia by a 42-31 score and then lost to Laurens-Mara-thon/Sioux Central by a 47-21 final tally.

In their duel with the Warriors, a double forfeit started the evening at 106 pounds before the Knights' Tyler Dalen received a forfeit win a 113 pounds.

The Knights would forfeit at 120 and at 126, Jake Wegner was pinned in 1:14 by Jon Michael Henry.

At 132 pounds, Connor Tonderum would outlast Cody Cameron to claim a 10-9 decision victory. Ty Gibson would follow up at 138 pounds with an 11-1 major decision win over Jared Schmitz to put the Knights up, 13-12.

But at 145 and 152 pounds, the Knights would surrender forfeits to the Warriors, giving Alta-Aurelia a 24-13 lead.

At 160 pounds, Matt McGrauth scored a 5:12 win by fall over Manny Murillo and Quinn Parker collected a win by forfeit at 170 pounds to allow the Knights to re-take the lead at 25-24.

But once again, a pair of forfeits at 182 and 195 pounds would give the Warriors the lead once again.

Kyle Long would receive a forfeit for the Knights in the 220 pound match, but a forfeit at 285 pounds would seal the Knights' fate in the 42-31 setback, despite the strong effort.

Moving into action against the host Chargers of Laurens-Marathon/Sioux Central, the Knights would forfeit at 106 pounds before Tyler Dalen received a win by forfeit in his 113 pound match. A double forfeit at 120 resulted in no points for either tem, but at 126, Jake Wegner earned a 13-8 decision victory over Megan Wernimont to make the score 9-6 for the Knights.

At 132 pounds, Connor Tonderum would lose a 16-0 Technical Fall to Brice Wennell and at 138 pounds, Ty Gibson was pinned in 1:53 of his match with Colen Moens as the Chargers took a 17-9 advantage.

A pair of forfeits at 145 and 152 pounds by the Knights inflated the Chargers' lead to 29-9 before the Knights got back on track.

Matt McGrauth would stop the streak with a :51 win by fall over Bailey White in action at 160 pounds and at 170 pounds, Quinn Parker came away with a 3:50 win by fall over Matt Koening to make the score 21-29.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruth-ven-Ayrshire would be forced to forfeit the 182 and 195 pound matches again before Kyle Long was the victim of a 5:15 fall at the hands of Cameron Graff in the 220 pound match and the Knights forfeited the 285 pound match for the 47-21 final score.

"I though the guys wrestled much better Tuesday night than we have been over the past few weeks,"?admitted Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Head Coach Cody Alesch. "With only seven guys in, it is tough to compete in duels, but our aggressiveness was much improved from las week."
