Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks staged a furious comeback in the final quarter of regulation play Tuesday night but fell to Spencer in a 42-39 overtime thriller.

The loss gives Emmetsburg an 1-2 mark in Lakes Conference play as they prepare to travel to Storm Lake on Friday night to meet the Tornadoes.

Coach John Kennedy's squad, playing its second game in as many nights, struggled from the opening tip to get an offensive flow against Spencer's Tigers. The Tigers would jump out to an 11-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but Emmetsburg would regroup for the second quarter and managed to outscore Spencer 10-9 in the quarter to cut the deficit to a half-dozen points, 20-14.

Emmetsburg would take the lead, 34-33 with 2:05 to go, but the lead would swap back and forth until a free throw by Paige Naig tied the score at 37-37 with :39 to go.

A?wild flurry followed, with Emmetsburg's Kaity Degen fouling out, but Spencer would miss on the free throws. A traveling call would give the ball to the Tigers, but a miss on a game-winner with :09 gave Emmetsburg a final shot, but Ashton Connelly's shot glanced off to send the game to the extra stanza.

Spencer would score first and would never relinquish the lead, as Emmetsburg would score one bucket in the final four minutes. But with :02 to go in the overtime, a three-point shot by Faith Schmidt glanced off the iron as Spencer escaped with the 42-39 win.
