POCAHONTAS - It was a hard-fought victory on Monday night for the Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate. A late rally would give Coach Eugene Ruppert's Lady Wolverines a 45-42 win over the Maidens of Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer in a non-conference matchup.
The game started out evenly as the Maidens took an early lead but the Lady Wolverines fought back to tie the contest at 12-12 to end the first quarter.
Both teams would battle fiercely in the second quarter, with tough defense at each end of the court holding the offenses in check, but the Lady Wolverines would post a one-point, 19-18 lead at the halftime break.

The Maidens would come out fighting in the second half and continued to play tough defense against the Lady Wolverines. A few missed shots and shots that wouldn't fall would allow WBM/GCB to fall behind the Maidens to trail 28-25 at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Wolverines would fight back in the final quarter and managed to re-take the lead and edge out to a 36-28 lead with 3:00 to play. But the Maidens would come back and harrowed the margin to 43-42 with :28 to go before the Lady Wolverines got a pair of clutch free throws from Courtney Bargman and Jessica Abrahamson to take the 45-42 victory.
For the Lady Wolverines, Jessica Abrahamson and Kayla Bargman both scored 14 points, while Sarah Berte added nine points. Kaley Lempke scored three points and McKenzie Grimm made one free throw.
At the free throw line, West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate would connect on 16 of 26 opportunities while Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer made six of 11 shots.
