WEST BEND - The New Year opened with a tough loss for the West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate Wolverines Tuesday in a 58-50 loss to North Sentral Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted. The eight-point loss dropped the Wolverines under.500 with a 4-5 mark to open the second half of the roundball season.
The game opened on an even note as the two teams played to a 14-14 tie after one quarter, but the Wolverines would sputter on offense to score just seven points in the second quarter, while NSK/AR jumped out to take a 33-21 advantage at the intermission.
The third quarter would be a turnabout situation, however, as West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate would outscore NSK/A-R by a 13-8 tally but still trailed 41-34 to start the final period. NSK/AR would hold on to their lead and allow the Wolverines to get no closer than the 58-50 final tally.
For the Wolverines, Chris Schmidt tallied 15 points, while Jason Zinnel added 10 points. Jesse Zinnel added nine points to the score with Jordan Buhs and Mitch Bonnstetter both scoring eight points.
The Wolverines will play next on Jan. 10 when they travel to Graettinger to take on Ruthven-Ayrshire/Graettinger-Terril.
