Emmetsburg's Junior Varsity boys earned a split in their games last week on the hard wood. On Tuesday, the young E-Hawks lost a heartbreaking 31-30 decision at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, but rebounded to earn a 44-36 win over Cherokee on Friday night on the road.
Against HMS, Emmetsburg led 13-12 after the opening quarter and 19-17 at the break. The E-Hawks would come out and maintain their lead through three quarters for a 26-24 advantage to start the final eight minutes. But down the stretch, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn mounted a furious comeback and managed to slip past the E-Hawks for the 31-30 win.
Michael Pugh would lead Emmetsburg with 14 points, while Mike Myers and Erik Drost both added four points. Brandon Elbert, Aaron Bird, Joe Jackson and Austin Krause all added two points each. with Aaron Bird handing out four assists.
Emmetsburg made just nine of 22 from the field and four of 10 from the arc, but didn't make a free throw.
In Friday's game at Cherokee, the E-Hawks led 20-18 at the half and then walked away from the Braves for the 44-36 win.
Austin Krause would pace the E-Hawks with 16 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Elbert and Mike Myers both added eight points an three assists, while Michael Pugh added eight points and Erik Drost tallied six points and grabbed five rebounds.
Emmetsburg made 17 of 40 shots from the two and two of seven outside the arc, and connected on six of 10 free throw attempts.
The split gives Coach Phil Geelan's Junior Varsity squad a mark of 5-7 on the season.
