Arlo C. Duhn 1914-2012

Funeral service for Arlo C. Duhn of Emmetsburg was Saturday, Feb. 18, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Kim Peterson and the Rev. Trudy A. Peterson officiated.

Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery, South Walnut Township. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Arlo Clarence Duhn, son of Henry L. and Betty Clara Margrethe (Jensen) Duhn, was born Feb. 20, 1914 in Emmetsburg. Arlo graduated from Emmetsburg High School. Following high school Arlo began farming.

On June 18, 1941, Arlo was united in marriage to Sylvia Jorgensen in Graettinger. To this union four daughters were born.

On March 4, 1942 Arlo enlisted in the United States Army. While in the Army he served in Normandy, the Rhineland, and Central Europe, where he engaged in several major conflicts. After being honorably discharged Arlo came back to Emmetsburg where he returned to farming.

Sylvia passed away in 1993. Arlo was married to Florence Osher on Nov. 21, 1998 at Lost Island Lutheran Church near Ruthven. They made their home in Ruthven until her death in 2008. Arlo later moved to Emerald Oaks in Emmetsburg where he was currently living.

Arlo was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg and enjoyed attending the men's Bible Study. He was active in the National Farmers Organization for many years. Arlo was an avid gardener and was instrumental in organizing the local farmer's market.

Arlo passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 97.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sylvia; his second wife, Florence; two brothers, Albert and John Duhn; an infant sister, Louise Duhn; and a granddaughter, Khia Backlund.

He is survived by his children, Orlew and Larry Lauger of Fort Worth, TX, Sharon and Lee George of Chanhassen, MN, Janet and Mike Backlund of Man-kato, MN and Susan Mugrdechian of Minnetonka, MN; a stepson Bruce and Donna Osher of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Duhn of Burns, OR and Marvin Duhn of Emmetsburg; two sisters, Vivian Jorgensen of Graettinger and Betty Jorgensen of Litchfield, MN.
