Harvey Dale Bettenhausen, son of Arnold and Anna (Schonewise) Bettenhausen, was born Oct. 6, 1929, on the family farm near Princeton, NE. He attended elementary school through the seventh grade in Princeton. The family moved to Lincoln, NE in 1942 where Harvey attended Everett Junior High School. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947.

After working in a grocery store for a year, Harvey enrolled in Teachers College at the University of Nebraska. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1952 with teaching endorsements in physical education and mathematics. Upon graduation from the university, he enlisted in the Air Force and served as a specialist in athletics, recreation and physical conditioning. He was stationed in Alaska for two years.

While in the Air Force, Harvey married Clara Arms on Feb. 14, 1953, in St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Lincoln, NE. Upon his discharge from the Air Force in 1956, he began teaching and coaching at Palmyra High School near Lincoln, NE. He also attained his Master's and Specialist Degrees from the University of Nebraska and studied additional mathematics through the National Science Foundation at the University of Idaho, Santa Clara University, John Hopkins University, and Drew University in New Jersey.

After teaching, coaching and being a high school principal in Nebraska for 13 years, the Bettenhausen family moved from Nebraska City to Emmetsburg in 1969. Harvey was principal at Emmetsburg High School for 23 years until his retirement in 1992.

Harvey died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 at the age of 82 in PARC Hall at Emmetsburg.

His parents and three brothers, Irven, Elden and Ralph, preceded him in death.

Harvey Bettenhausen is survived by his wife, Clara, of Emmetsburg; two children and their spouses, Dr. David and Elaine Bettenhausen of Fostoria, OH and Kevin and Linda (Bettenhausen) Renner of Omaha, NE; a brother, Glen of Akeley, MN; and three grandchildren, Dereck Lang of Toledo, OH, Erika (Lang) Berryman of Bascom, OH and Elena Renner of Omaha, NE.

Harvey was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Emmetsburg. He was a past-president of the Emmetsburg Rotary Club, and he served several years as the club's secretary-treasurer. He was proud of being a "Paul Harris Fellow" of Rotary International.

He was a trustee of the Emmetsburg Community School Education Foundation and served on its scholarship committee. His hobbies and interests included woodworking (he completed many projects for his family), golfing (although he was unable to play for a number of years) and athletics (keenly interested in Emmetsburg and Iowa but also remained a loyal fan of "Big Red" athletics at the University of Nebraska).
