A Mass of Christian Burial for Jeanine M. Spies of Emmetsburg was held Saturday,?March 31, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Clem Currans officiated.
Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge.
Jeanine Margaret Spies, daughter of George and Grace (Ferguson) Freeman, was born April 12, 1935 in Estherville. She graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1953. Following graduation, Jeanine attended Drake University in Des Moines and received a degree in education. Jeanine taught kindergarten in Sheldon and Fort Dodge.
On June 16, 1956, Jeanine was united in marriage to John F. Spies at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union four children were born.
Jeanine loved caring for her family and was very proud of her children's accomplishments. When Jeanine became a grandmother, she extended her love and pride to them as well, always anxious to share stories about activities they were involved in. Jeanine loved social gatherings and had many fun times at the Emmetsburg Country Club with family and friends. She will be remembered as an excellent cook and gracious hostess by anyone that had the opportunity to share in her hospitality. Her specialty was creating wild game dinners and sharing these recipes with others. Jeanine was a talented pianist and she enjoyed quilting. She was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Jeanine passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg at the age of 76. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda Berkland (Roger).
She is survived by her husband, John of Emmetsburg; her children, John A. Spies and his wife, Sharon of Prior Lake, MN, David Spies of Rochester, MN, Charles Spies of Emmetsburg and Jeanie Spies of San Diego, CA; her grandchildren, Kathryn Spies, Kristen Spies, John W. Spies, Isabella Spies, Hannah Spies, Alex Spies, Elisabeth Lyons and Marie Spies; a brother, George F. Freeman of Sallisaw, OK; sisters, Corrine Ashby and her husband, Jack of Iowa City, Dawn Freeman of Emmetsburg and Judy Mullen and her husband, Ron of Emmetsburg; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
