Alice Hobson was born on a farm near Morgan, MN, the youngest of 12. At the age of 9 she moved from the farm to Sleepy Eye. After attending teacher training she taught for nine years in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Deciding teaching was not her calling, she then worked as a medical secretary in Minneapolis, Colorado Springs, and Des Moines.
It was in Des Moines that she met her husband, Howard. They were married in 1948 and then moved to Emmetsburg where Howard took over his father's optometry practice. Alice enjoyed bridge clubs, sewing club, gardening, and PEO where she was renowned for her pie-making.
Howard and Alice traveled extensively in the United States, sightseeing and rock hunting. They amassed a sizeable rock collection which was later given to the Emmetsburg Library. They also traveled on tours to over 20 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.
In 1993, a few years after Howard died, Alice moved to Boulder, CO to be nearer to her daughter and grandson. Alice became an avid Rockies baseball fan and had season tickets many years, the last time when she was 98 years old. In addition to following sports, she also enjoyed reading, playing cards and backgammon, and doing crossword puzzles.
Alice is survived by daughter, Jill; grandson, Ethan, and many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held in Boulder, CO. Memorials can be sent to PEO's Cottey College, Nevada, MO.
