WEST?BEND - The purple and gold of West Bend-Mallard will be well represented at the 2012 State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. West Bend-Mallard's girls and boys will send a total of 14 events to State following last Thursday's District/Regional meet at Manson. The Lady Wolverines qualified nine events for state, with the Wolverine boys sending five events to the blue oval at Drake Stadium.
The Lady Wolverines ran away from the remainder of the Class 1A Regional field, as they won the team championship with 152 points. West Bend-Mallard received automatic qualifications from their first place Regional event winners, starting with Jessica Abrahamson's championships in the shot with a 39'5.5" throw and discus with a throw of 111'7".
The 4x800 relay, with Sarah Berte, Madelynn Gehrt, Ashley Schmidt and Portlind Schmidt took first in 10:26.20, while the Distance Medley, with Kayla Banwart, Wendy Grimm, Ashley Schmidt and Portlind Schmidt took first with a 4:37.02.
The 4x100 and 4x200 relays, comprised of Harrison Schmidt, Meredith Collins, Kaley Lempke and Kenzie Grimm, both finished first with times of 1:52.01 for the 4x200 and :51.92 for the 4x100.
Earning second place finishes and also qualifying for state was the Sprint Medley relay, with Harrison Schmidt, Meredith Collins, Kaley Lempke and Wendy Grimm with a time of 1:54.13.
Also finishing second and earning the state meet bid was Kaley Lempke in the 100 meter dash with her time of :13.06. Rounding out the qualifications were Kenzie Grimm, whose :27.22 time for a third place in the 200 meter dash earned her a trip to the state meet, as well as Meredith Collins in the 100 meter dash with a time of :13.21 to earn a trip to Des Moines.
The Shuttle Hurdle Relay, with Kayla Banwart, Heather Fehr, Wendy Grimm and Rachel Wirtz finished second with a 1:15.60, while the 4x400 finished second with a 4:23.80 from Ashley Schmidt, Erin Larson, Madelynn Gehrt and Harrison Schmidt.
Wendy Grimm finished second in the long jump with a 14'10.5" leap and Lauren Thatcher placed second in the 3000 meter run.
Kayla Banwart finished third in the long jump with a 14'9.5" leap, while Madelynn Gehrt was third in the 400 dash with a 1:05.09 effort. In the 400 hurdles, Rachel Wirtz ran a 1:18.14 for a third place finish and Portlind Schmidt was third in the 1500 meter run with a 5:31.09 clocking.
Alicia Mogler would finish sixth in the 400 meter dash with a :70.54 time and Rachel Wirtz finished seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of :18.3.
The Wolverine boys would finish fourth in the team race, but picked up a total of five state track qualifications through the 1A District meet on Thursday.
An automatic berth went to Jesse Zinnel for winning the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:57.27. Mitch Bonnstetter would also earn a trip to the blue oval by finishing second in the 100 meter dash with a time of :11.41. Teammate Jordan Buhs would finish fourth in the 200 meter dash with a :23.59, but qualified for state with his time.
The Wolverines' 4x800 relay, with Jesse Zinnel, Jason Zinnel, Nathan Grimm and Aaron Montag finished second in 8:30.17 and qualified for state, along with the Distance Medley Relay squad, comprised of Jordan Buhs, Logan Streit, Mitch Bonnstetter and Aaron Montag, as they finished fourth with a time of 3:50.92.
Non-qualifiers included Jesse Zinnel in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:09 for a second place, and the 4x200 relay's 1:37.44 time, which gave Mitch Bonnstetter, Logan Streit, Jordan Buhs and Davey Jergens a fourth place finish.
Mitch Bonnstetter finished fifth in the 200 meters with ?:23.62 time, while Collin Thatcher was sixth in the 400 hurdles witha 1:02.28 and the 4x400 relay, with Nathan Grimm, Dustin Johnson, Collin Thatcher and Aaron Montag were sixth with a 3:51.49 time.
Davey Jergens was seventh in the 100 dash with an :11.91 time, while the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, Collin Thatcher, Dustin Johnson, Davey Jergens and Sean Riesenberg, took seventh in 1:07.47.
Sean Riesenberg placed eighth in the 110 hurdles with an :18.9 clocking, while Jack Fehr was eighth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:34 and the 4x100 relay, with Collin Thatcher, Logan Streit, Jordan Buhs and Davey Jergens, placed eighth with a time of :47.93.
The Class 1A Action at the State Track and Field Championships begins this afternoon (Thursday) at 2:00 p.m.
For the Lady Wolverines,
Jessica Abrahamson will compete in the 1A shot put starting at 2 p.m.,
Meredith Collins will compete in the 100 mete dash prelims at 4:20 p.m. and the Wolverines' Mitch Bonnstetter will compete in the boys' 100 meter dash prelims at 4:35 p.m. The girls' 4x800 relay, Sarah Berte, Madelynn Gehrt, Ashely Schmidt and Portlind Schmidt, will run at 4:50 p.m. and the boys 4x800 relay will run at 5:40 p.m., with Jesse Zinnel, Jason Zinnel, Nathan Grimm and Aaron Montag running in the first heat of three timed heats.
Wrapping up Thursday's events for the Lady Wolverines will be Kenzie Grimm in the 200 meter dash prelims at 6:20 p.m and Jordan Buhs in the boys' 200 meter dash prelims at 6:40 p.m.
Friday's schedule will open with Jessica Abrahamson competing in the Class 1A discus at 2:00 p.m.
The girls Distance Medley, with Kayla Banwart, Wendy Grimm, Ashley Schmidt and Portlind Schmidt, will run at 2:40 p.m. and will be followed by the 4x200 relay, Harrison Schmidt, Meredith Collins, Kaley Lempke and Kenzie Grimm, which will run in their final at 4:30 p.m.
The boys' Distance Medley, with Jordan Buhs, Logan Streit, Mitch Bonnstetter and Aaron Montag, will run at 5:40 p.m.
At 6:20 p.m. the girls' 4x100, Harrison Schmidt, Meredith Collins, Kaley Lempke and Kenzie Grimm will compete in their preliminary heat to conclude the day.
Saturday will open with the girls Sprint Medley Relay, as Harrison Schmidt, Meredith Collins, Kenzie Grimm and Kaley Lempke will compete at 9 a.m. and Jesse Zinnel will run in the 1600 meter run at 1:45 p.m.
Should Meredith Collins and/or Mitch Bonnstetter qualify for the 100 meter dash finals, they will be run at 12:25 and 12:30 p.m.
If Kenzie Grimm and/or Jordan Buhs qualify for the 200 meter dash finals, those events will be run at 1:25 p.m. and 1:35 p.m. and if they qualify, the 4x100 relay finals would be run at 3:05 p.m. Saturday.
