May 24, 2012
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg's Boys of Summer opened their season hosting Bishop Garrigan on Tuesday night and started the campaign with a 9-6 win over the Golden Bears.

The E-Hawks struck early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first frame, as errors would bring in runs from Jake Jackson and Jacob Kibbie, running for pitcher Taylor Wegner. A passed bal would allow Luke Jackson to come home for the 3-0 lead on two errors.

Wegner was dominate in the first three innings, retiring Bishop Garrigan in order, and in the bottom of the third with two out, Wegner lit up Reece Wadle with a shot over the left field fence for a solo homer and 4-0 lead.

Bishop Garrigan would find their bats in the top of the fourth, touching Wegner for three earned runs off four hits, but left the bases loaded to end the at-bat. Emmetsburg was unfazed, and opened with a big double from Joe Jackson and followed by singles from Aaron Bird and Greg Wesley to load the bases before Brady Berkland uncorked a two-run double to score Jackson and Bird. Wesley would scored off a sacrifice fly from Ryan Kliegl that gave the E-Hawks a 7-3 advantage.

Bishop Garrigan would reel off a pair of base hits that would turn into runs in the top of the fifth to cut the margin to 7-5 and a pitching change would retire the E-Hawks in order in the bottom of the fifth.

The Golden Bears would be limited to a walk in the top of the sixth before Emmetsburg came back up to bat. Greg Wesley led off with a single to right and worked around the bases off walks of Brady Berkland and Ryan Kliegl before Jake Jackson rapped out a base hit to score Wesley.

A single from Wegner would score Berkland, but the E-Hawks would leave the bases filled to end the inning with the 9-5 lead.

Going into the seventh, Wegner induced a fly ball to Bird at second and Bird made a quick catch and throw to Luke Jackson at first for the second out, but on the next at-bat, Bishop Garrigan's Austin Vaske took Wegner's pitch over the right field fence for a solo dinger that ended Wegner's night on the hill.

Ryan Kliegl came in to relieve and issued a walk before Joe Jackson made a catch at the right field fence to end the game.

Taylor Wegner would get the win, going six and two-thirds innings in giving up six runs, five earned, off six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Ryan Kliegl got the save with one walk in one-third of an inning.

Wegner would record the home run shot and a single, while Brady Berkland and Joe Jackson both had doubles. Greg Wesley had two hits, while Jake Jackson and Aaron Bird added the other hits for the E-Hawk offense.

The E-Hawks were slated to host Algona in a pair of varsity five-inning games on Wednesday and are scheduled to play at Laurens-Marathon on Thursday evening, May 24.
