The Lakes Conference campaign started on a high note for the Emmetsburg Lady E-Hawks on Wednesday, May 30, with a 14-2 blowout win over Spirit Lake in four innings.
The Lady E-Hawks would start the league matchup a little tentatively as Spirit Lake would tally a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. After a lead-off strikeout, a walk would turn into a run off a double by Paige Krause and an error would score a second run before the Emmetsburg defense retired the side.
But the Lady E-Hawks shook off the poor defensive start. Aly Berven and Kaity Degen were both walked and Faith Schmidt was hit by a pitch to load the bases, prompting a pitching change for Spirit Lake. Bailey Newman was replaced by Carly Ites, would issue three more walks of Teegan Olson, Jacque Carlson and Whitney Kibbie, while Michaela Rehm got on base off an error as the entire Emmetsburg lineup batted and Berven, Degen, courtesy runner Emily Bonnstetter and Carlson came over the plate to score.

The Indians opened the second inning with an error and a walk, but left both runners stranded.
Ites would surrender two walks and the Indians committed an error to load the sacks again to be relieved by Paige Krause, who then surrendered a base hit and two walks that scored Berven, Degen and Bonnstetter before the inning ended with Emmetsburg now holding a 7-2 advantage.
In the top of the third inning, Spirit Lake got their second hit of the contest, as Paige Krause hit a single to center field, but was left waiting at second when the at-bat ended.
The Lady E-Hawks came up in the bottom of the third and batted through the order again, with Alexa Naig drawing a walk and then being followed on base by Kaity Degen with a single. For the second time in the game, Faith Schmidt was hit by a pitch before Teegan Olson cracked off a double to score Naig and Degen.
Emily Bonnstetter scored for Schmidt off a sacrifice by Miranda Vlasman and a double from Michaela Rehm would bring Olson over the plate for another four-run inning for the Lady E-Hawks and a 11-2 lead at the end of three frames.
Spirit Lake would go down two outs to start the fourth inning, but drew a walk that was followed by a base hit that moved the two runners into scoring position. But, a timely strikeout from Schmidt would end the at-bat.
Emmetsburg stepped up to the plate a final time, as Alexa Naig was put out to lead off the at-bat. Aly Berven nailed a single and advanced off a fielders's choice that was too late to catch Kaity Degen. The duo advanced off an error by the third baseman on a line drive down the foul line by Faith Schmidt that allowed Berven to scamper home, followed by Degen following an error by the third baseman.
Teegan Olson stepped up to the plate and drilled a single to the fence that allowed courtesy runner Emily Bonnstetter to come home, ending the game on the 12-run differential rule.
Faith Schmidt got the win, going four innings and facing 20 batters, giving up two runs, one earned, off three hits, with three walks and six strikeouts.
For the Lady E-Hawks, Michaela Rehm had a double, while Teegan Olson had two hits. Miranda Vlasman and Kaity Degen both added singles to the effort.
