by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

Relay for Life honors those in their fight against cancer and remembers those who lost their fight against the disease.

Palo Alto County Relay for Life is this Saturday, June 16, at the Courthouse Square in Emmetsburg. Events begin at 12 noon.

"We are bringing Relay back to the survivors," said chairman Val Bormann. "We want the focus to be on the survivors."

The first lap will be led by the Team of Hope who are all cancer survivors. Honorees are Brenda Keniston, Nick and Kathy Fank, Larry Joyce, Deb Orr, Deb Alderson and Gayle Schmeling.

Relay for Life is from 12 noon to 10 p.m. Team members from 14 teams will be walking laps on the Courthouse Square sidewalks throughout the day.

New this year at Relay for Life:?Butterfly Release and Survivor Garden.

"Kerber Milling is sponsoring a butterfly release," said Val. "People can purchase a butterfly in honor of someone and join us for a group release at 2 p.m."

Val noted, "Butterflies can be purchased from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and luminaries can be purchased throughout the day as well."

The "Survivor Garden" is a spot specifically for cancer survivors. Plants will be brought in by Saxton's Greenhouse to create a special place for survivors.

"This is a place where survivors can sit on the bench with their families and have their picture taken by Prairie Bee Photography, " said Val. "The Relay Committee will be providing pictures for free, one per family, which will be mailed out after the event."

The goal for 2012 Relay For Life is $45,000 and right now over $37,000 has been collected.

"My goal is $50,000," said Val Bormann. "We need as much support as we can possibly get."

She pointed out that corporate and business sponsorships have doubled from last year and she offered thanks for their great support.

"Anyone who still wants to donate can," she said. "There is no donation too small. The fiscal year for Relay ends Aug. 31, so we will continue to raise money until then."

The luminaries will be lighted at dusk, approximately 8:30 p.m., for the DVD presentation of the days events and the last lap at 10 p.m.

The public is invited to take part in the activities. Enjoy the entertainment, purchase food from the team tents, and buy raffle tickets for a flat screen TV, laptop computer, bicycle, and a one year membership to the Smith Wellness Center.
