Lady E-Hawks, GT/RA Meet On Softball Diamond

TERRIL?- It took a year to make it happen, but Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire and Emmetsburg finally met on the softball diamond after two meetings in 2011 were rained out. The meeting took place Tuesday night at Terril with the Lady E-Hawks claiming a 12-2 victory to improve to 14-4 on the season.

Emmetsburg would open the first inning at Terril with Aly Berven singling and Kaity Degen walking before Faith Schmidt reached on an error and Berven scored the first run of the game. A fly ball by Miranda Vlasman was followed by a ground out by Jacque Carlson that allowed Degen to score, but Schmidt was stranded when Michaela Rehm flew out.

The Knights would get a leadoff single from Alyssa Hoffman, but Hoffman was thrown out stealing second before Hailley Nelson hit a fly ball out and Morgan McGrauth struck out to end the inning.

With a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, the Lady E-Hawks' Teegan Olson doubled to lead off before Whitney Kibbie grounded out. Alexa Naig singled to score Olson's run and Aly Berven walked, but the duo were stranded when Degen and Schmidt both hit fly outs.

GT/RA would go down in order in the bottom of the second off a strikeout of Nikki Brown, a fly ball by Maddie Schany and a ground out by Daisy Jordan.

Miranda Vlasman led off the top of the third with a fly out and Jacque Carlson struck out before Michaela Rehm singled and was followed by a single from Olson. Whitney Kibbie loaded the bases with a walk, but the trio was left waiting when Alexa Naig struck out..

In the bottom of the third, GT/RA would have Grace Skattebo ground out before Amanda Aielts singled, but Cassy Hampson hit a fly ball and Alyssa Hoffman grounded out to end the inning with the Knights still trailing 3-0.

Emmetsburg erupted in the top of the fourth with four runs, Aly Berven led off reaching off an error and a second error put Degen on base. Faith Schmidt was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Miranda Vlasman scored off a fielders' choice that scored Berven. Degen would come home off a fielders' choice on Jacque Carlson's at-bat, but Schmidt was forced at third.

Michaela Rehm would be walked but Teegan Olson rapped out a base hit to score Vlasman and Carlson. Kibbie would get on base off an error but Rehm was put out at third. Alexa Naig singled to load the sacks again, but Berven was struck out to end the threat.

Trailing 7-0, the Knights needed to make a little noise and did so in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back errors by Ashton Connelly at first base put Nelson and McGrauth on base before Brown grounded out, but Nelson was able to score on the play. Maddie Schany would ground out, but McGrauth came home to cut Emmetsburg's lead to 7-2 after Jordan was struck out.

The Lady E-Hawks got Kaity Degen on base off an error to lead off the fifth, but Schmidt was struck out swinging. A?wild pitch would score Degen before Whitney Kibbie was struck out looking.

But, designated player Jacque Carlson got ahold of a pitch from Hoffman and lifted in cleanly over the left field fence for a solo home run before Rehm hit a fly ball to end the at-bat with Emmetsburg leading 9-2.

A pitching change opened the bottom of the fifth inning as Ashton Connelly relieved Faith Schmidt for the Lady E-Hawks in the circle. GT/RA would lead off with Skattebo getting a base hit, but Aielts struck out looking and Hampson struck out swinging before Hoffman struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Lady E-Hawks led off the sixth with Teegan Olson getting a single and Whitney Kibbie getting on off a fielders' choice. Pinch runner Katie Ruiz would be thrown out at second on Naig's ground out and the at-bat ended with Berven flying out.

The Knights got a leadoff single from Nelson in the bottom of the sixth frame, but McGrauth struck out before Brown hit a grounder that put her out at first, but allowed Nelson to score a run. Maddie Schany would be struck out looking to end the inning with the score 9-3.

In the top of the seventh, Emmetsburg led off with Degen drawing a walk and then working around to score off a single by Faith Schmidt. Miranda Vlasman walked, but Carlson struck out. Michaela Rehm would ground out, but pinch runner Kendall Deitering scored a run before Teegan Olson collected her fifth hit of the game that scored Vlasman's run.

Whitney Kibbie was hit by a pitch, but was stranded with Olson when Naig struck out.

The Knights had one last chance, but saw Jordan and Skattebo both ground out before pinch hitter Marly Bakken hits a single, only to be stranded when Cassy Hampson grounded out to end the game.

Faith Schmidt got the win, going four innings against 14 batters, giving up two runs off three hits while striking out three batters. Ashton Connelly relieved for three innings, facing 12 batters and giving up one run off three hits with fiver strikeouts.

Alyssa Hoffman took the loss in seven innings, facing 46 batters, allowing 12 runs off 13 hits, four earned, with one solo home run, along with six walks and six strikeouts.

For Emmetsburg, Jacque Carlson had a home run , while Teegan Olson had a double and four singles as she went five-for-five at the plate in the contest. Faith Schmidt and Alexa Naig both had two hits, while Aly Berven, Michaela Rehm and Whitney Kibbie all added singles.

For the Knights, Alyssa Hoffman, Hailley Nelson, Morgan McGrauth, Grade Skattebo, Amanda Aielts and Marly Bakken all tallied base hits.
