Over 80 golfers turned out on Saturday for the resumption of the Emmetsburg Mens' Open Golf Tournament at the Five Island Golf Course. The Open had been not been played for the past few years but was was restarted this year with a pleasing turnout, according to tournament organizers.
An Emmetsburg golfer would claime the top honors in the Open, as Kort Freeman shot ronds of 37 and 30 to earn a Championship round berth and then carded a round of 31 to win the Open title with a 98 stroke score.
Runner up honors were claimed by Justin KEan of Scottsdale, AZ, as she shot a 34 and 33 before carding a 33 in the finals for a round of 100.
Third place honors would be decided in a tie-breaker, however as two former Emmetsburg residents, Troy Lavrenz and Dan Thompson would battle for the honor. Lavrenz would shoot rounds of 34 and 32 and then carded a 36 for a 102 score, while Thompson, who now lives in Mapleton, shot a 38 and a 31 before shooting a 33 for his 102 score, but the nod on the tiebreaker when to Thompson for the third place finish.
