WEST BEND - Strong play and consistent efforts have moved the Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City Bradgate into 13th place in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union's Class 1A Volleyball Rankings during the past week.
The Lady Wolverines earned that ranking with some solid wins, including a 3-1 triumph over Cornbelt Conference rivals North Union on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Armstrong.
Against North Union's Warriors, WBM/GCB won the match with scores of 14-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-23. McKenzie Grimm would pace the Lady Wolverines with 15 kills, 15 digs and six blocks in the victory. Courtney Bargman handed out 28 assists and had five blocks, while Ashley Schmidt had four ace serves, six kills and nine digs.
Heather Fehr added six kills and three blocks, while Kayla Banwart had a pair of ace serves and dug out15 shots as Jenna Thul made 10 digs and Lauren Thatcher added six digs to the effort.
On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Lady Wolverines played in the CWL?Tournament.
WBM/GCB defeated Northwood-Kensett 21-9 and 21-18 before meeting Belmond-Klemme and taking two games by scores of 21-14 and 21-9. In the final match of the tournament, the Lady Wolverines met up with the tournament hosts, CWT, and won the tourney by game scores of 21-5 and 21-9 to improve to 18-2 on the season.
The Lady Wolverines return to action tonight (Tuesday) when they host Harris-Lake Park in a key Cornbelt Conference match as part of the Wolverines' Homecoming week observance. A win by WBM/GCB would give them the outright Cornbelt Conference lead, while a loss would result in a three-way tie between the Lady Wolverines, H-LP?and North Union, all with one loss.
On Sept. 24 the Lady Wolverines travel to Spirit Lake for a match with 3A Spirit Lake and then return home the next evening to host Graettinger-Terril/ Ruthven/Ayrshire. Then on Thursday, Sept. 27 WBM/GCB finishes conference play with a trip back to Corwith.
