Emmetsburg Readies For Homecoming Week

Preparations have been finalized for the annual Homecoming Week observance in the Emmetsburg Community Schools for 2012. Homecoming week begins Monday, Sept. 24, and concludes Friday night, Sept. 28, when the Emmetsburg E-Hawks host Hull Western Christian for the Homecoming football game.

The week's activities begin on Monday, Sept. 24, with "Bum Day" at the high school. Students in Mr. Kennedy's Art Classes will be decorating storefront windows in Emmetsburg during the day. The E-Hawk Freshmen and Sophomore football teams will host Western Christian, while the Emmetsburg Cross Country teams will compete in the Algona Invitational at River Road Golf Course in Algona.

Tuesday, Sept. 25 will be "Tacky Tuesday" for the dress-up theme, with high school students decorating their campus after the "Super E-Hawk" competition that morning in the auditorium. That evening, the Lady E-Hawk volleyball team will entertain Estherville Lincoln Central in Lakes Conference action. Wednesday, Sept. 26, is Homeroom Olympics day as well as Color Day or Dress Up Day, with students having a choice of wearing pre-determined colors or wearing their best dress-up fashions to classes.

Thursday, Sept. 27, will be Costume Day, and will be highlighted by the coronation of the 2012 Homecoming King and Queen in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The Emmetsburg Cheer Squad will perform a routine and will join the Emmetsburg High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Aaron Phillips, in the School Song.

Mistress of Ceremonies Madison Reimer will welcome the audience prior to the introduction of the candidates and class attendants. Seniors chosen as candidates for Queen this year are Miranda Vlasman, the daughter of Doug and Amy Vlasman, Jacque Carlson, the daughter of Mike and Tracey Carlson; Rachel Schroeder, the daughter of Mark and Connie Schroeder and Whitney Kibbie, the daughter of Jim and Kay Kibbie. The King candidates are Austin McCartan, the son of Rhonda McCartan, Jake Jackson, the son of Brian and MaryEllen Jackson, Andrew Wellik, the son of Brian and Jane Palmer and Nick Schany, the son of Shawn and Liz Schany.

Serving as flower and crown bearers are Megan Dunlap, daughter of Mike and Julie Dunlap, and Ben Merwald, son of Steve and Vicki Merwald.

Class attendants for the Junior class are Kendall Deitering, daughter of Brian and SueAnn Deitering and Erik Drost, son of Doug and Margaret Drost. Sophomore attendants are Michaela Rehm, daughter of Mike Rehm and Beth Carrigan and Jacob Kibbie, son of Kim and Scott Kibbie. Freshman attendants are Kiersten Duhn, daughter of Marsha Duhn and Brian Duhn and Wesley Schultes, son of Beth and Lynn Schultes.

Serving as the guest speaker for the Coronation will be Lori Riley. Riley is a para-educator for the Emmetsburg Community Schools and will deliver a message about pride prior to the coronation.

The 2011 Homecoming Queen and King, Katie Kassel and Arik Kerr, will return to crown their successors. The Emmetsburg High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Aaron Phillips, will provide music for the coronation ceremonies.

Friday, Sept. 28 is the culmination of the Homecoming week activities, with Black and Gold day being observed throughout the district. Classes will dismiss one hour early to allow students to attend the Homecoming Parade, which will begin at 2:45 p.m. at Soper Park and will proceed south on Broadway to 10th Street, where a pep rally will be held in Courthouse Square.

The annual Homecoming Tailgate, sponsored by the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses will once again precede the parade, with businesses throughout the community offering tailgating treats prior to the start of the parade.

Homecoming actitivites will conclude that evening with the football game between the E-Hawks and the Western Christian Wolfpack at Duane Twait Field. Kickoff will be a 7 p.m., and the Homecoming royalty will be introduced during the Halftime activities at the game.
