LAURENS - It is said that offense wins games and defense wins championships, but for the Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gi-more City-Bradgate, a huge defensive play with 1:10 to go Friday gave the Wolverines a 22-21 win over Laurens-Marathon.
The win improves the Wolverines to 5-1 on the season in Eight-Man District Two and 6-3 overall as they prepare for the season finale` Friday night when they entertain the league-leading Mustangs of Newell-Fonda.
Things looked tough for the Wolverines early, as Laurens-Marathon took a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and extended the lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter. The Wolverines didn't panic,
The Wolverines erased their goose egg with a seven yard run by Jordan Buhs, and then scored again off a Jesse Zinnel pass to Jason Zinnel just before the intermission to make the score 21-14.
In the third quarter, the Wolverines came out and scored a touchdown and added the two-point conversion for a 22-21 lead that would hold through the third and into the fourth quarter. But with 1:10 to go in the game, the Wolverine defense came up big with a quarterback sack inside the 10. But, Dustin Johnson would seal the outcome of the game when he stepped in front of a pass in the end zone to kill the potential game-winning drive of the Chargers.
The Wolverines would take over after the interception and went into the victory formation to close out the game with the narrow, one-point victory.
