Every Day Is A Holiday

October 23, 2012
Kristy Tonderum , Emmetsburg News

A few years ago my sister would keep a calendar of strange holidays on her dry erase board on her refrigerator. Every day had to have something on it. In the process we found there are a great deal of "weird and unusual" holidays celebrated out there in the world around us.

Did you know that November 3 is Sandwich Day? How about Ice Cream Day on December 13? There seems to be a holiday for everything, and not just food. December 4 is Wear Brown Shoes Day and January 8 is Bubble Bath Day. I seriously want to know who comes up with this stuff.

Now anyone that knows me knows I love TV. Lately is this busy life of mine seems to be getting in the way of my quality TV time and my 93% full DVR proves it. Even still, when I found out a holiday that involves TV was just around the corner I couldn't believe I've never heard of it.

October 23 is TV Talk Show Host Day. This holiday celebrates and honors all TV Talk Show hosts. This very special day is celebrated on the birth date of legendary nighttime talk show host Johnny Carson. Carson, who is considered the "King of Late Night Television", hosted The Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992. His reign lasted a record 29 years, 7 months, 21 days. There were 1,859 episodes.

While this day is celebrated on Johnny Carson's birth date, it is intended to show appreciation to all Television talk show hosts, daytime and nighttime. From Ellen to David Letterman, Jerry Springer to Chelsea Handler this holiday is all about our favorite TV Talk Show Personalities.

No one seems to know who created this holiday or when it started. In fact, I only found out about it because I was on a bizarre and unique holidays website, the same way we would find the holidays for Kim's calendar.

I just wish I could have properly celebrated today; maybe I could have had a television talk show marathon and watched them all day and night. Maybe next year I will have to plan better and take the day off and give the holiday the respect it deserves.

As for this year, I threw on my pink garb, went to work and celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I hope everyone is enjoying their Pink Out Day and all the pink outfits and business specials have come along with it. Cancer touches all of our lives and I'm very proud of the communities support for the cause and helping the committee raise funds for Relay for Life. Thank you. I hope to see you at the Pizza Ranch tonight for Tip Night!
