Funeral service for John Ring of Emmetsburg was held Saturday, Nov. 17, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Kim Peterson officiated.
Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
John (Johnny) H. Ring was born July 22, 1935, to John (Jack) and Lillian (Schwake) Ring in Jenkins, Ia. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Riceville High School. Lance Corporal Ring was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA, and he served in the Korean War.
On Jan. 6, 1957, John and Jean Elise McVinua were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. John worked for General Telephone Company for 35 years. They lived in Mason City, Dubuque, Cresco and Forest City before settling in Emmetsburg in 1960.
John was a member of V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg and Bethany Lutheran Church. After retirement, John and Jean vacationed in Arizona during the winter where they visited family and friends. During retirement, John started his hobby of mowing. He enjoyed gardening and he gave away most of his produce to family and friends.
Jean passed away on Jan. 7, 2004, after 47 years of marriage. Though John's heart was broken, he continued to stay active working part-time at Hardware Hank, gardening, having coffee with the guys, mowing lawns and helping just about everyone in town. John treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren.
John Ring died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. He was 77.
John is survived by three sons:?Mike and his wife, Jodi, of Fountain Hills, AZ, Dan and his wife, Lori, of Marshalltown, and Jeff of Wichita, KS; a daughter, Jolene Cleveringa and her husband, Doug, of Sioux Center; 13 grandchildren: Eric (Andrea), Dustin, Brooke, Nicole (Tom), Chris, Travis, Trevor, Jack, Kyle, Megan, Jacob, Kole and Jade; and six great grandchildren: Paisley, Keaton, Darby, Camery, Lainey and Jeanae.
Also surviving are three sisters, Lois Ankrum of Winona, MN, Katherine Warburton of Riceville and Sharon Erath of Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law, Berdean Ring of Riceville; brother-in-law, Don McVinua and his wife, Mardell, of Storm Lake; and daughter-in-law, Mary Engstrom, and her husband, Tim, of Emmetsburg.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; two brothers, Marvin and Elmer; a sister, Reberta; five brothers-in-law, Harold, Gene, Lorell, Roger and Dale; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn.
