Darlene Lockwood 1913-2012

Funeral service for Darlene E. Lockwood will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the United Methodist Church in Mallard. The Rev. Evelyn Lewiston will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Darlene Etta Nighbert was born April 21, 1913 to Alvin and Carrie (Frye) Nighbert in Lake County, SD. She began her education in country school and graduated from Madison High School in 1933.

On July 2, 1937, Darlene was united in marriage to Kenneth Lockwood in South Dakota. Darlene and Kenneth made their home in South Dakota before moving to Mallard in 1942 where they farmed for many years. Darlene was very active working on the farm with Kenneth.

Darlene enjoyed gardening, golfing and quilting. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Mallard, where she was also active in United Methodist Women and church circle. She assisted as a 4-H leader for the years that her children were involved in the program. Darlene and Kenneth spent several winters in Mesa, AZ.

In 1994 Darlene and Kenneth moved to Emmetsburg. After Kenneth's death in 1996, Darlene moved to Willow Ridge Independent Living in Emmetsburg where she resided until moving to Windhaven Assisted Living in Cedar Falls, where she made her home for a year and a half.

Darlene passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at the age of 99.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; her brothers, Kenneth and Roy Nighbert; her sister, Nathalene Kruel; and son-in-law, Homer Mileham.

She is survived by her children, Sharon Mileham of Sheffield, and Gary and Marilyn Lockwood of Hampton, IL; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
