Funeral services for Richard C. Berkland of Cylinder will be held at 10:30 am. Thursday, Dec. 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew.
Burial will be at the St. John's North Cemetery. Joyce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Richard C. Berkland was born April 13, 1945 in Fenton, the son of Ervin and Marguerite (Barkve) Berkland. He was a graduate of Cylinder High School. He attended PBI Institute to become a Lab and X-ray Technician. He served as an Army Lab and X-ray Technician in Vietnam. He worked as a Lab and X-ray Technician in Lake City and Knoxville before returning to Cylinder to farm. He also worked at Wigdahl's, IEI, Skyjack and Wild Rose Casino.
On May 26, 1972, Richard was united in marriage to Diana Enockson in Mankato, MN. The couple made their home in Cylinder where they raised their four children.
Richard attended St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew where he served in a number of roles. He served for many years on the Cylinder Coop Elevator Board and was a member of the Cylinder Lion's Club until its dissolution.
He loved to spend time visiting with family and friends, playing with his grandchildren, and working on projects in his shop. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage.
On Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, Richard passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital. He was 67.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Diana of Cylinder; daughter, Maris-sa Fickbohm, her husband James, and children Miranda and Austin of Altoona; daughter, Mindy Carmichael, her husband Jeremy, and children Reagan, Olivia, and Harrison of Lake St. Louis, MO; son Shane, his wife Amanda and daughter Linden of Des Moines; son Damon and girlfriend Ashley Madsen of Cylinder; sisters Marlys (Ed) Maahs of Twin Lakes, Diana (Doug) Pals of Moscow, ID, Bonnie (Vaughn) Saxton of Okoboji, Colleen Petzenhauser of Lake City; brothers Mervin (Patti) of Spring Park, MN and Keith (Margaret) of Boston, MA; godchildren Joel Pals, Brian Saxton, Stacy Berkland, Adam Enockson, and Kara Strand; and numerous other family and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry, and sister Janell Shain.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to Horizon's Unlimited.
