Matmen Claim League Opener

ALTA - Emmetsburg's E-Hawk wrestlers opened their Lakes Conference season Thursday with a victory over Cherokee by a 45-33 score. The E-Hawks also defeated Alta-Aurelia in the second half of the double-duel by a 69-12 tally to improve to 5-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in league action.

Against Cherokee, the E-Hawks started with Tanner Dahm being pinned in 56 by Michael Rosewall at 285 pounds. But, at 106 pounds, Dillon VanOosbree earned 9-5 decision victory over Drake Bechtel. Conner Crosgrove received a win by forfeit for Emmetsburg at 113 and Jake Miller also received a win by forfeit at 120 pounds to put Emmetsburg up 15-6.

In the 126 pound match, Nick Merwald was pinned by Hunter Morrow in 3:23 of the match and Chance Saathoff, wrestling at 132, was pinned in 1;58 by Christian Lundy. Chris VanHeuvelen also fell victim to a pin in his 138 pound match, falling in 1:53 to Andy Pitts to make the score 15-24.

The E-Hawks' Caige Elbert received a win by forfeit at 145 before Joe Schmidt was pinned in :44 by Blake Booth in the 152 pound match.

At 160, Brady Bailey pinned Luke Zieman in 2:43, but Nick Schany battled hard to come up short in an 8-2 decision loss to Andras Lukos-Farcus that gave Cherokee a 33-27 lead.

But at 182 pounds, Andrew Wellik needed just 1:06 to pin Skylar Mongan and at 195 to tie the match at 33-33 before Austin McCartan pinned Dallas Boger in 1:00 to give the E-Hawks the lead at 39-33.

In the final match at 220 pounds, Taylor Wegner received a win by forfeit to give the E-Hawks the 45-33 win.

In the match against the Warriors of Alta-Aurelia, the E-Hawks started out with Taylor Wegner earning a :27 win by fall over Joe Rodriguez before Tanner Dahm was pinned in 3:52 of the 285 pound match at the hands of Garrett VanHouten.

Dillon VanOosbree would take on Colton Larson in the 106 pound match and earned a 3:28 win by fall that would give the E-Hawks a 12-6 lead.

Emmetsburg would then see Conner Cosgrove, Jake Miller and Nick Merwald all receive wins by forfeit before Chance Saathoff was pinned in 1:01 of the match by Cody Cameron.

At 138 pounds, Chris VanHeuvelen would earn a 5-4 decision victory over Parker Meier and at 145, Caige Elbert would claim a 3:20 win by fall victory over Dylan Olson.

With Emmetsburg holding a commanding 39-12 lead, the E-Hawks didn't let up. At 152, Joe Schmidt earned a 1:59 win by fall over Aldrich Phoumy and at 160, Brady Bailey needed just :59 to pin Tyler Sanders.

Nick Schany earned a 1:59 win by fall over Manuel Murillo in the 170 pound match before Andrew Wellik received a win by forfeit and Austin McCartan pinned Christian Jarvis in :32 of the 195 pound match to end the dual with a 69-12 score.

"Our younger kids wrestled with great position and gave themselves opportunities to score and eventually win matches," noted emmetsburg Head Coach Jared Pickett. " It was exciting to see our kids compete and win with fundamentals.

We've spent a lot of time this week creating angles before taking shots and finishing on our feet. I felt we made a big step in these areas Thursday."

Emmetsburg will continue Lakes Conference action on Thursday, Dec. 6, when they travel to Hull to take on Western Christian and Spencer. Action will get underway at 6 p.m.
