POCAHONTAS -- Charlotte Hersom, age 100, of Pocahontas, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hersom were Monday, Dec. 17, at the Hope United Methodist Church in Pocahontas. Pastor Clare DeBoef officiating.
Burial was in Washington Cemetery near Havelock. Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas handled the arrangements.
Charlotte Pirie was born July 10, 1912 near Havelock. She was the daughter of William and Edna (Barlow) Pirie. She attended area schools. Her eighth grade county graduation score ranked her second highest in Palo Alto County. She competed in high school basketball for five years, having started in eighth grade. In her five years of basketball she played all positions of three court basketball, never fouled out, was never taken out and only substituted once. She graduated from Mallard High School in 1931.
On Feb. 17, 1934, Charlotte married Richard H. "Dick" Hersom in Mallard. The couple farmed in the Mallard, Curlew and Plover areas, retiring in 1974. Charlotte then worked at the Ideal Restaurant as a cashier and at the Pocahontas Community Hospital mainly as a housekeeper until retirement. Richard passed away in 1986.
Charlotte was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church, the Peace Circle, Women's Society and the Sew and Sew Quilters of the church. She was a charter member of the Pocahontas Genies and the Neighborhood Sunshine Club. She was a lifetime member of the Pocahontas County Historical Society, the Pocahontas Hospital Auxiliary and she was a former member of the Mallard Garden Club. Charlotte enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, hand art work, gardening and raising flowers, especially African violets.
Survivors include her children, Richard K. (Janet) Hersom of Fort Dodge; Ronald G. (Jo Elyn) Hersom of Marshalltown and Jeannine C. (Doyle) Martin of Elkhart, IN; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; five sisters, Florence Meredith, Matilda Pirie; three infants, Goldie, Veanus and Lucille; and three brothers, Stuart, Kenneth and Donald Pirie.
