E-Hawks Slip Past Sioux Central

Brennan Records 200th Coaching Victory

SIOUX?RAPIDS - It took a late rally on Tuesday night for the Emmetsburg E-Hawks to earn a 48-41 victory over Sioux Central in a non-conference boys-only contest. But, more importantly, the victory gave Emmetsburg Head Coach Mike Brennan his 200th career coaching victory.

After playing four games last week, the E-Hawks came into Tuesday's contest without the services of senior Jake Jackson once again, and went with the all-junior lineup of Brandon Elbert, Michael Pugh, Mike Myers, Austin Krause and Erik Drost.

The two ballclubs got off to a slow start, but traded baskets through the first frame to a 13-13 tie at the end of the quarter.

In the second frame, the two teams traded turnovers back and forth until the Rebels were able to take a slim, 21-19 lead at the half time break.

The Rebels would come out in the second half and were able to hold the E-Hawks at bay, matching shot for shot and making an occasional three-pointer to post a 28-25 lead at the end of the third frame.

But Emmetsburg rose to the challenge as the final quarter started. After the Rebels scored a quick basket to take a 30-25 lead, the E-Hawks answered with a quick bucket and a three-pointer to tie up the game, and then added two more buckets to start edging away from the Rebels as the final minutes ticked down.

The E-Hawks withstood a final furious rally attempt as the last minute ticked down to take the 48-41 victory.

Leading the way for the E-hawks was Michael Pugh with five three-pointers on his way to 18 points. Erik Drost added 16 points to the effort, while Austin Krause scored seven. Mike Myers chipped in five points and Brandon Elbert added two points to improve the E-Hawks to 2-6 overall on the season.

Next up for Emmetsburg is another non-conference tilt tonight (Thursday) against the Pioneers of Okoboji, before the E-Hawks close out the first half of the season on Friday hosting Western Christian of Hull in Lakes Conference play.
