E-Hawk Junior Varsity Earns Road Victory Over Rebels

December 20, 2012
Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

SIOUX?RAPIDS - Emmetsburg's Junior Varsity E-Hawks took to the road on Tuesday to meet Sioux Central in a non-conference contest and came home with a 30-22 win.

With Coach Phil Geelan down with the flu, Assistant Coach Billy Geelan took over on the bench and guided the young E-Hawks to a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.

Emmetsburg continued to stymie the Sioux Central offense through the second quarter, holding the Rebels scoreless through the second eight minutes of the contest while on the other end of the court, they were doubling their own score to take an 18-4 lead at the intermission.

As play started in the second half, Sioux Central came out with renewed vigor and began to hit some shots as the tried to fight their way back into the contest. Emmetsburg continued to move the ball well, working the offense patiently for good shot opportunities.

When the third quarter came to a conclusion, the E-Hawks held a 15-point, 28-13 lead over the Rebels, as they had outscored Sioux Central 10-9 during the quarter.

But in the final quarter, the Rebels would make a determined push to try and steal the game away from the Emmetsburg squad.

The E-Hawks would struggle to get their offense on track for a while during the middle of the quarter, as Sioux Central began hitting shots and were able to get several put-backs and second shot opportunities.

With time winding down, the E-Hawks saw their 15 point advantage gradually whittled down by the Rebels, but Emmetsburg would not panic and continued to play a patient offense with bench players coming into the contest and persevering to take the 30-22 margin of victory.

Emmetsburg was led offensively in the victory by 12 points from Jacob Kibbie, while Joe Jackson added seven points. Zach Anderson and Luke Jackson both came away with four points in the effort. Zach Hutchison chipped in two points in the closing minutes of the contest and Aaron Bird drained a free throw for one point.

The win improve the Emmetsburg Junior Varsity record to 4-4 on the season.

Emmetsburg returns to action tonight (Thursday) when they host Okoboji in non-conference play and then host the Wolfpack of Western Christian in league action on Friday night.
