The first half of the 2012-2013 basketball season came to a less than auspicious close for Emmetsburg's E-Hawks in a 68-17 loss to the Wolfpack of Western Christian. The loss gives Emmetsburg a mark of 2-7 overall on the season and 0- 5 in the Lakes as the holiday break begins.
Emmetsburg would struggle from the opening tip against the pressure defense of the Wolfpack and coupled with Western Christian's quickness, fell behind 16-5 at the end of the first quarter of play.
The offense was almost non-existant in the second quarter, as Emmetsburg was only able to tally a lone bucket in the eight minute period, while Western went on a 20-point scoring binge to leave the E-Hawks looking at a 36-7 deficit at the half-time break.
Emmetsburg would have its best offensive effort of the night in the third quarter, as they were able to score eight points while Western Christian added 17 points and got the advantage of the continuous clock with just under 3:00 to go in the third frame to post a 53-15 lead at the start of the final stanza.
Both teams would substitute liberally in the final quarter of the contest, but once again, Emmetsburg was unable to get the ball in the hoop and ended the contest with the lopsided 68-17 loss.
Emmetsburg got six points each from Erik Drost and Austin Krause through their battles inside all game long. Mike Myers added three points and Brandon Elbert got a bucket for two points to round out the scoring.
After the holiday break, the E-Hawks will resume action for the second half of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 8, when they host Spirit Lake in Lakes Conference action.
