E-Hawk Junior Varsity Battling Hard In Contests

Emmetsburg's boys' Junior Varsity basketball team has been battling hard in their contests during the first half of the season. Coach Phil Geelan's E-Hawks have earned a mark of 4-5 at the holiday break.

In a contest played on Dec. 7 against the Bulldogs of LeMars, the young E-Hawks came up short in a 54-28 setback. At the intermission, Emmetsburg trailed by a 26-15 tally, but LeMars put the game out of reach in the second half on their way to the 54-28 final score.

The E-Hawks were led offensively by Greg Wesley, as he scored 10 points, while Luke Jackson added seven points. Jacob Kibbie chipped in six points, with Zach Anderson and Joe Jackson both adding two points and Brandon Elbert making a free throw for one point.

Emmetsburg made 10 of 27 shots from inside the arc and just one of six three-point attempts in the loss, while hitting just five of 14 free throws. The E-Hawks grabbed 20 rebounds, but committed 22 turnovers and made 17 steals in the contest.

After the loss, Emmetsburg rebounded on Dec. 10 with a 35-12 non-conference win over the Harris-Lake Park JV squad on the road at Lake Park.

Emmetsburg posted a 15-3 lead after one quarter and 17-6 advantage at the half. After three quarters, the E-Hawks led 23-12 and coasted to the 35-12 win, holding the Wolves scoreless in the final quarter.

Greg Wesley led the way with nine points, while Jacob Kibbie added six points and five rebounds. Luke Jackson had four points with five rebounds and Joe Jackson also added four points with eight rebounds.

Zach Anderson, Cooper Hofstad, Aaron Bird, Steve Huang, Zach Hutchison and Nick Jackson all added two points each to the winning effort, which saw the E-Hawks make 15 of 40 shots from the two and one of six from outside the arc. Emmetsburg made both free throws and pulled down 31 rebounds while committing 13 turnovers and making 18 steals to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Jumping back into conference play the next night, on Dec. 11, the E-Hawks would fall to Spencer by a 34-16 score. Emmetsburg trailed 20-8 at the intermission before falling to the Tigers.

The scoring was limited by the Spencer defense, as Zach Anderson led the effort with five points, while Luke Jackson added four points. Joe Jackson scored three points, with Greg Wesley and Steve Huang both adding two points.

Emmetsburg hit just five of 30 shots inside two-point range and only made one of their 13 tries for three-pointers. At the line, the E-Hawks made three of four attempts.

Emmetsburg pulled down 32 rebounds in the contest while committing 14 turnovers and made three steals to fall to 2-3 on the season.

A short rest would be followed by their third game of the week on Friday, Dec. 14, as the E-Hawks hosted Storm Lake. The game would be a back-and-forth battle all the way and came down to a last-second, desperation shot to give the E-Hawks the 35-34 victory.

Emmetsburg held a 22-11 lead at half time, only to see Storm Lake battle back and catch the E-Hawks in the final moments of the game, but Luke Jackson threw up a last-second shot that fell home for the win.

Joe Jackson paced the offense with 12 points, while Aaron Bird added nine points and Luke Jackson scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds. Greg Wesley added three points, with Jacob Kibbie and Cooper Hofstad both scoring two points and Zach Anderson chipping in a free throw for a point.

Emmetsburg made 13 of 29 shots inside the arc and missed their lone trey attempt, while sinking nine of 17 free throws. The E-Hawks grabbed 20 boards, made 13 turnovers and seven steals to improve to 303 on the year.

Saturday night, Dec. 15, the E-Hawks played their fourth game of the week as they hosted South Central Calhoun in a non-conference tilt. The contest would go back and forth but this time, the E-Hawks would come up short on the last second shot to fall 27-26, after they trailed 18-12 at the intermission.

Luke Jackson would led the offense with 11 points, while Joe Jackson added six markers and Greg Wesley scored five points. Cooper Hofstad and Jacob Kibbie both scored two points in the loss.

Emmetsburg hit 10 of 31 shots inside the arc and made two of 11 from the three, while missing all four free throw attempts.

The E-Hawks grabbed 29 rebounds, committed 16 turnovers and made seven steals.

After a win over Sioux Central on Dc. 18, the E-Hawks lost to Western Christin by a 56-30 tally on Dec. 21.

Emmetsburg trailed by a 20-36 score at the halftime break, but Western used their speed and defense to preserve the 56-30 win.

For the E-Hawks, Luke Jackson led the offense with 13 points, while Greg Wesley added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jacob Kibbie chipped in four points and grabbed seven rebounds and Zach Anderson scored three points.

Emmetsburg made just 11 of 27 shots from inside the two point arc and one of two shots outside the arc. The E-Hawks connected on five of 13 free throw opportunities, while committing 23 turnovers and making seven steals in the loss, which drops Emmetsburg to the 4-5 overall mark on the season.

The E-Hawks will resume action for the second half of the season Tuesday, Jan. 8, by hosting Spirit Lake.
