Dorothy Irene Hersom was born Jan. 20, 1912 in Mallard, the daughter of Frederick and Mabel (Sorenson) Sundemeyer. Dorothy attended school in Mallard.
On Dec. 29, 1930, Dorothy was united in marriage to Alfred Hersom in Mallard. The couple lived in Mallard, Laurens and Spencer before Dorothy moved to the Emmetsburg Care Center where she lived for the past 18 months.
Dorothy sold World Book Encyclopedias and she was a skilled seamstress. She made her daughters' wedding dresses. Dorothy attended the Mallard United Methodist Church, and she was a member of the Mallard Women's Club, Prison Ministry, Laurens Doll Club, Cantor Club, Royal Neighbor's, 500 Card Club and Mallard P.T.A. She loved to paint with oils and watercolor and make dolls. Dorothy would gather the family around the piano to sing while she played. Just this past year, Dorothy won the Spelling Bee Contest at the Emmetsburg Care Center shortly after her 100th Birthday.
On Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, Dorothy passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was six days from her 101st Birthday.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Margaret (Donald) Bottger of Emmetsburg, Alfred D. (Donna) Hersom, Jr. of Forks, WA, Carolyn (Jerrold) Capesius of Englewood, CO, Burton (Carol) Hersom of Emmetsburg, Roger (Kim) Hersom of Aurora, CO, and Frederick (Jeanetta) Hersom of Cheyenne, WY; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild; and sister-in-law, Bernece Hersom of Emmetsburg
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred; a brother and three sisters.
A Memorial Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the United Methodist Church in Mallard. Burial is in Rush Lake Cemetery, Curlew.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
