What better way is there to stay warm than to heat up the kitchen? So let's get cooking.
It was chili weekend last Saturday and Sunday. The Nature Center hosted Music & Chili and Whittemore Community Betterment hosted a Chili Contest on Saturday. Sunday was the Get Wild! Chili Cookoff at Wild Rose Casino and the Whittemore group brought a pot of chili to that competition. There were definitely some interesting chili recipes and all tasted great.
Here's another competition that might inspire some home cooks: the 30th National Beef Cook-Off. After watching some of the home cooks compete on televised programs (Tuesday night was The Taste) there is a lot of untapped talent in America's kitchens.
Here are some details about the Beef Cook-Off:
The Iowa Beef Industry Council is calling on home cooks to start grilling, broiling, roasting, stir-frying and stewing their healthy beef menu ideas for the 2013 National Beef Cook-Off recipe competition.
Now through April 15, Iowa home cooks can submit their best beef recipes online at www.beefcookoff.org for a chance to win $25,000 and a trip to the Metropolitan Cooking &?Entertaining Show in Washington, D.C.
This year's contest theme is "Making the Most of MyPlate," which will encourage delicious, healthy recipes from a variety of food groups. Entrants are asked to develop original and tasty beef-focused recipes that include broadly appealing ingredients from the fruit and vegetable, grain products and dairy products groups.
They explained that the MyPlate initiative is led by the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion and is designed to help consumers make better food choices.
There are four recipe categories:
Belt-Tightening Beef Recipes - Healthy and affordable beef recipes that are great values to prepare.
Semi-Homemade Beef Recipes - Recipes that combine beef and fresh ingredients with prepackaged food products.
Real Worldly, Real Simple Beef &?Potato Recipes - Easy and healthy lean beef and fresh potato recipes that feature international flavors.
Craveable Fresh Beef &?California Avocado Recipes - Easy, fresh beef and avocado recipes that highlight California cuisine and cooking trends.
To enter the contest, participants must visit www.beefcookoff.org and use the online entry form. Contest participants may submit multiple recipes in all of the various contest categories as long as they meet the contest rules and criteria, which are provided on the website.
The National Beef Cook-Off is held bi-yearly and is one of the top three recipe/cooking contests in the country.
Recipes must be original, healthy, demonstrate great taste and include ingredients with broad consumer appeal and simple preparation techniques.
There you have it. Now, head to the kitchen and get those creative juices cooking.
