E-Hawk Wrestlers Earn Sectional Crown

Eight E-Hawks Advance To District Meet

MANSON - The road to the state tournament began in strong fashion for Emmetsburg's E-Hawks at Saturday's Class 1A Sectional Tournament in Manson. The E-Hawks earned the Sectional Team championship and also qualified eight wrestlers for advancement to Saturday's 1A District Meet at Okoboji.

The first consideration for the E-Hawks will be an appearance in the 1A Regional duals at 6 p.m. Tuesday night in Emmetsburg. In the Regional Dual, Emmetsburg will wrestle Central Lyon/George Little Rock in one dual and Manson NW?Webster will square off against Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in the second dual. The winners of those two duals will then wrestle for the right to advance to the State Dual Team Tournament in Des Moines on Feb. 13.

The road to state saw Emmetsburg earn four Sectional championships and four runner-up finishes to earn advancement to this coming Saturday's District Meet at Okoboji High School. A first or second place finish at the District meet earns a trip to the State Tournament on Feb 14-16 in Des Moines.

For Emmetsburg, seniors led the way as Brady Bailey, Nick Schany, Andrew Wellik and Austin McCartan all earned championships, while Tayler Wegner, Tyler Leuer, Jake Miller and Dillon VanOosbree all finished in second place to earn advancement as well.

The sectional marked the return of Brady Bailey to the lineup after illness had kept him from competition since before the Christmas break. After a first round bye at 152 pounds, Bailey needed just :19 to pin Dylan Ohlson of Alta-Aurelia in the semi-finals and in the finals, met Tyler Hubrich of Pocahontas Area. Bailey would go on to win the 152 pound title with a 2:59 win by fall over Hubrich to advance for the district meet.

At 170 pounds. Nick Schany returned to the mat after an injury and started his day with a 1:37 win by fall over Thomas McColley of Manson Northwest Webster. In the semi-finals, Schany needed just :47 to pin Hunter Brown of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire to advance to the finals match. Meeting Tyler Case of Pocahontas Area for the championship, Schany scored a 1:57 win by fall to earn the title.

Andrew Wellik, wrestling at 182 pounds, drew a first-round bye and then pinned Henry Sippel of Ridge View in 1:53 to advance to the finals match. Against Nathan Krueger of Manson Northwest Webster, Wellik earned the championship with an :11 win by fall over Krueger.

At 195, Austin McCartan also had a first round bye and then needed just :15 to pin Tanner Peterson of Manson Northwest Webster in the semi-final match. McCartan then wrestled Jeremy Watson of Pocahontas Area for the championship and collected a 10-0 Major Decision for the championship.

The E-Hawks got a second place finish from freshman Dillon VanOosbree at 106 pounds. VanOosbree drew a first-round bye and then advanced with a 6-4 decision victory over Chase Bulten of Manson Northwest Webster in the semi-finals. For the finals, VanOosbree would meet Joe Minkler of Pocahontas Area who earned an 11-4 decision win over VanOosbree to give the E-Hawk the second place finish.

At 120 pounds, Jake Miller had a first-round bye and then scored a :30 win by fall over Edgar Ayala of Pocahontas Area in the semi-final. For the championship match, Miller would meet Harley Janssen of Manson Northwest Webster, but would fall victim of Janssen in a 1:55 fall, giving Miller the runner-up final at 120.

For Tyler Leuer at 132 pounds, the road was a little more difficult. Leuer earned a 1:04 win by fall over connor Schoening of Pocahontas Area in the first round, but lost a 5-3 decision to Alexander Schmitz of Carroll Kuemper in the semi-finals.

Moving into the consolation round, Leuer earned a 15-5 Major Decision over Cody Cameron of Alta-Aurelia for third place. But, Leuer earned the opportunity for a wrestleback against Cody Blair of Manson Northwest Webster. Leuer would come back and win a7-5 decision in the wrestleback match to earn the second place finish at 132 pounds for Emmetsburg.

In action at 220 pounds, Tayler Wegner opened his Sectional tourney with a :53 win by fall over John Seidl of Carroll Kuemper and then pinned Garrett VanHouten of Alta-Aurelia in 2:50 of their semi-final match. Advancing into th finals match against Michael Davidson of Ridge View, Wegner would come up short in a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to settle for second place.

Brett Steinkamp earned a :33 win by fall over Harmon Atwood of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City -Bradgate, but then was pinned by Pocahontas Area's Mitch Brinkman in 4:29 of their match. Steinkamp would pin Dylan Samuelson of Manson Northwest Webster in their consolation match in :43, but Steinkamp would not have a wrestleback opportunity and finished third at 113 pounds for the E-Hawks.

At 126 pounds for the E-Hawks Nick Merwald earned a 1:22 win by fall over Anthony Torres of Pocahontas Area, but in the semi-final, Merwald would lose a 7-0 decision to Austin Thompson of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.

In the consolation bracket, Merwald met Jordan Rozenboom of Manson Northwest Webster but would be pinned in 5:17 of the third place match to finish fourth.

At 160 pounds, Wes Brennan drew a first round bye and met Dru Kenny of Ridge View in the semi final match. Brennan would be pinned in :47 of the match to move into the consolation championships. Brennan would wrestle Skyler Michalski of Manson Northwest Webster but was pinned in :10 to finish fourth for the E-Hawks at 160 pounds.

At 145 pounds, Caige Elbert would be pinned in 2:28 of his opening round match against Jason Kenny of Ridge View. Moving into the consolation rounds, Elbert pinned Ben Stange of Alta-Aurelia in 3:45 to advance to the fifth place match. Meeting Dylan Dunn of Carroll Kuemper for fifth place, Elbert needed just :20 to pin Dunn to claim the fifth place finish.

Chris VanHeuvelen, wrestling at 145 pounds, was pinned in :37 of his opening round match by Daniel Sommerlot of Pocahontas Area, and in the first round of consolation, Merwald was pinned by Tyler Hoffman of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in 3:34 to end his tournament.

Rounding out Emmetsburg's efforts at 285 pounds was Tanner Dahm. Dahm was pinned in :55 of his opening round match with Cody Thompson of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and then would be eliminated from the tournament.

Action in Saturday's District tournament will get underway at noon at Okoboji High School in Milford.
