Its been a few years since Emmetsburg's E-Hawks made an appearance in the State Dual Team Tournament - 2010, to be exact. And, the tournament was held in Cedar Rapids back then.
Fast forward to Tuesday night - the E-Hawks hosted a Class 1A Regional Team Dual and punched their ticket to the State Dual Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Coach Jared Pickett's E-Hawks claimed a pair of convincing dual wins, first by defeating Central Lyon/ George-Little Rock by a 56-22 score and then earning the trip to state with a 59-21 win over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union.
The E-Hawks opened meeting Central Lyon/ George-Little Rock and survived an early setback before taking command of the dual.
Action started at 195 pounds, where Austin McCartan earned a 14-5 Major Decision over Travis VanderStreek. At 220, Tanner Dahm was pinned in 1:03 of his match with Ben Starr , but at 285, Tayler Wegner came out and pinned Nolan Gerdes in just :13 to give Emmetsburg the lead once and for all.
Dillon VanOosbree would trail Treyton Virtue 11-2 going into the third period, but came up with a 5:06 win by fall at 106 for the E-Hawks. At 113, Brett Steinkamp received a win by forfeit, making the score 22-6.
Jake Miller would earn a 1:42 win by fall over Tanner Robertson in action at 120, but the E-Hawks would forfeit at 126.
Nick Merwald came out at 132 and scored a 1:01 win by fall over Hunter Huisman and at 138, Tyler Leuer earned an 8-0 Major Decision win over Brodie Osborn for a 38-12 lead.
Caige Elbert would lose a 13-0 Major Decision to Zach Fugitt at 145 and at 152, Joe Schmidt was pinned in :21 by Brent Klingenborg to make the score 38-22, but that was as close as the Lions would get.
At 160, Brady Bailey earned a 1:04 win by fall over Ben Friedrichsen and at 170, Nick Schany pinned Alex Waagmeester in 1:15 of their match before Andrew Wellik put the finishing touches on the dual with a :34 win by fall over Andrew McCarty for the 56-22 final victory.
For the right to advance to the state duals, Emmetsburg met the Eagles of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union, who had defeated Manson Norwest Webster in the other half of the regional dual.
Starting at 220 pounds, Tayler Wegner needed just :09 to pin Ben Phillips. Tanner Dahm would fall victim to a 1:12 pin at the hands of Levi Letsche in the 285 pound match.
With a tied score, the E-Hawks got to work. Dillon VanOosbree earned a 2:41 win by fall over Michael Jacobson in the 106 pound match and at 113, Brett Steinkamp pinned Ben McDaniel in 1:41. At 120, Jake Miller put Austin Robinson on his back for a pin in :12 and at 126, Nick Merwald earned a :56 win by fall over Isaac Jacobson.
Chance Saathoff would be pinned in :38 of the 132 pound match, but at 138, Tyler Leuer pinned Mark Peters in 1:03.
Leading 36-12, the E-Hawks got a 2:39 win by fall from Caige Elbert over Jeremy Loutsch in action at 145 before Joe Schmidt would be pinned in :47 by Connor Holmes.
At 160, Brady Bailey earned a 1:06 win by fall over Dylan Rolfes, but at 170, Nick Schany would come up a point short in a heartbreaking 1-0 decision loss to Jacob Meehan.
Andrew Wellik would pin Justin Theisen in 5:01 of their 182 pound match and Austin McCartan stamped the state tournament ticket with his 22-5 Technical Fall in 5:08 over Jacob Letsche for the 39-21 final margin of victory.
Emmetsburg will meet Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 in a Class 1A Quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena
