Singing, Dancing And Excitement To Highlight EHS?“Extravaganza”

The air will be filled with music and the high energy of show choir performances this Saturday as the Emmetsburg High School Vocal Music Department will host its 19th Annual Emmetsburg "Extravaganza" Invitational Show Choir Contest. A total of 30 show choirs Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska will compete during the day on Saturday at Emmetsburg High School, with the finals competition slated for Saturday night in the EHS Gymnasium.

Performances will start at 9 a.m. Saturday in two performance centers at the Emmetsburg High School.

The 2013 "Extravaganza" will be one of the largest in the history of the competition, which began back in 1994. Additionally, the "Extravaganza" will be one of the largest events of its type in the state of Iowa during the 2013 season. A total of six Class 4A schools, six 3A groups, six 2A schools, five vocal jazz groups, two 1A and three middle school show choirs, along with two prep show choirs will take to the stages in the EHS Auditorium and Gymnasium to perform during the day's competition. Those groups will bring over 1,200 performers to the community and the school during the day.

Each visiting group is met by student hosts from the Emmetsburg show choirs, who escort their guest to a homeroom decorated and supervised by the EHS student hosts. In addition to their hosting duties EHS students also participate in the various aspects of production of the contest, including operation of sound and lighting systems, assisting the judges and providing support and assistance throughout the day in various capacities. Over 120 EHS vocal students will help at some time during the day.

The Emmetsburg Vocal Music Booster parents group provides organization and manpower for the food service and hospitality for the guests to the event. Along with the boosters, numerous volunteers from the community also provide their assistance during the by supervising the hallways, the warm-up rooms and serving food in the kitchen area. All parents of the 120 EHS vocal students contribute in some way to help the Vocal Department in what has turned into the department's major fundraising activity of the school year.

Entertainment by the various groups gets underway on Saturday at 9 a.m. Vocal Jazz groups, along with class 1A and Class 2A Show Choirs will compete in the auditorium, while show choirs in Class 3A and 4A, along with Middle School and Prep Show Choirs, will perform in the gymnasium.

Emmetsburg's Middle School Show Choir, "Evolution", will perform in the gym at 9:50 a.m., and the junior varsity show choir, "Black and Gold", will take to the stage in the gym at 10:45 a.m.

At the conclusion of the day session, the awards for Class 1A/2A and vocal jazz groups will take place at 5 p.m. in the auditorium and the awards for Middle School, Prep, Class 3A and 4A groups will take place in the gym at 5:45 p.m.

The six show choirs that received the top scores during the day, along with the highest scoring 1A-2A show choir will compete for the overall championship in the evening's finals. The Finals Concert, which begins at 7 p.m., truly features the best of the best and will be a very high energy and entertaining event. At the conclusion of the finals, the host Emmetsburg High Voltage Show Choir will take the stage for a performance prior to the presentation of final awards and trophies.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend the EHS Invitational for all or part of the day. A one-time admission charge will allow access to the performances during the day and the evening finals. Food is provided at the student center, featuring a pasta dinner, which will begin serving at 4:00 p.m..

The public is invited to join in and catch the excitement and musical energy of some of the finest show choirs in the five-state region on Saturday.
