A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary E. Ditch of Emmetsburg was held Monday,?March 4, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant was the Rev. Clem Currans.
Interment was at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Elizabeth Ditch, daughter of Joseph and Mary Amelia (Gallagher) Schumacher, was born Jan. 30, 1924 in Emmetsburg. She began her education in Freedom Township country school and then attended Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1940.
On May 13, 1943, Mary was united in marriage to Richard Ditch in Mallard. Mary was a devoted farm wife, and later went to work at Berkley's in Emmetsburg until she began cooking at the Emmetsburg Community School. After 20 years of employment at the school, Mary retired.
She was a member of Holy Family Parish and the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed volunteering for the Palo Alto County Hospital.
Mary was an avid card player and member of several card clubs. She also enjoyed playing golf. Mary and Dick were blessed with 69 years of marriage.
Mary passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons, Richard and Joseph; a brother, Gene Schumacher; four sisters, Gertie McCarty, Mildred Lenz, Marge Kunz and Francis Coyle; and a son-in-law, Mark Larson.
She is survived by her children, Dennis Ditch (Pat) of Vancouver, WA, Donna Grubb (Steve) of Burt, Mary Ann Larson of Winona, MN, Patti Ditch (Bernie) of Algona and a grandson that was just like a son, Todd Ditch(Danielle) of Emmetsburg; 11 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Schumacher; many nieces and nephews.
