E-Hawk Golfers Finally Get On The Links

April 30, 2013
Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Suppose you were a coach and your competitive season lost three week's worth of competitions due to weather. Sound far-fetched?

That's the story of Emmetsburg Boys Golf for 2013. The E-Hawks finally got to play a round of golf after being denied by Mother Nature for three weeks.

The season-opening match with Webster City on Thursday didn't turn out as hoped, though, as the E-Hawks fell to Webster City by a 167-173 total, but defeated Algona, who shot a 185.

For the E-Hawks, Michael Pugh led the effort with a 40 to earn runner-up medal honors, while Mike Myers shot a 42. Nick Schany shot a 43, with Jake Jackson and Taylor Wegner both carding rounds of 48 and Luke Jackson shooting a 50.

The E-Hawk Junior Varsity also played, scoreing a 211 to finish behind Webster City's 204 and ahead of Algona's 226 stroke total. Leading the JV were Clayton Freeman and Lane VerMulm both shooting 48, while Brian Merrill added a 55 and Nate Schiek shot a 60. Dillon VanOosbree carded a 61 and Cooper Hofstad shot a 63.

"This was the first opportunity that the E-Hawks had to play a complete round this year, and for the first time, I thought it was OK," noted E-Hawk Coach Kort Freeman. "I think the young men knew that we could have played better and probably should have beat Webster City. We have a lot of work ahead and a short time to get there."

Freeman continued, "All in all, it was also a decent showing by the junior varsity for their first meet of the year as well.

On Friday, the E-Hawks journeyed to West Bend for the annual Palo Alto County Boys meet, squaring off with West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. The E-Hawks were victorious with a 159, while GT/RA was second with a 189 and WBM/GCB shot a 205.

Taylor Wegner of Emmetsburg claimed Medalist honors with a 38, while Mike Pugh was runner-up with a roud of 39.

The remainder of the E-Hawk scoring saw Jake Jackson shoot a 40, while Mike Myers carded a 42. Luke Jackson shot a 46 and Nick Schany carded a 49.

For the Titans of GT/RA, Ethan Peterson led the effort with a 45, while blaze Alesch carded a 46 and Kyle Dalen finished with a 47. Jake Wegner shot a 51, Tanner Naig carded a 52 and Andrew Aeilts added a 57.

The Wolverines of WBM/GCB were led by the 45 of Brady Jenson. Cole Banwart added a round of 50, while Cole Woodford shot a 54. Taylor Bennett shot a 56 and Cole Miller added a 57, while Brandon Schutz carded a 61.

Playing their third match in as many days, Emmetsburg's golfers got a valuable preview of district play on Saturday when they won the Okoboji Invitational at Emerald Hills by shooting a 325. Okoboji would finish second with a 329 score, with third place in the team race going to Sibley-Ocheyedan with a 332 stroke total.

Counting scores for Emmetsburg included a 79 for Mike Pugh and an 80 for Michael Myers. Jake Jackson added a round of 81 and Nick Schany carded a round of 85.
