Funeral service for Ruth Berkland of Emmetsburg, formerly of Cylinder, is 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 16, at St. John's Lutheran Church north of Cylinder. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Mandaline Berkland was born June 8, 1923, in Rodman, the daughter of Carl and Martha (Olson) Lillevik. Ruth graduated from Cylinder High School in 1941, and she attended Emmetsburg Junior College.
On Feb. 20, 1946, Ruth was united in marriage to Oscar Berkland at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Ruth and Oscar began their lives together on a farm near Cylinder. Ruth taught country school in the Cylinder area. In 1961, they built their home in Cylinder.
Ruth was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church most of her life. She was always active in the church, and served as secretary, treasurer and president of the circles through the years. She served on the church council and as financial secretary for St. John's. Ruth belonged to the Cylinder Women's Club and Birthday Club.
On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Ruth passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was 89.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: James and wife, Karen of Elk Grove, CA and Robert and wife, Lucy Do of Lafayette, CA; four grandchildren: Jaime and Ian Berkland of Lafayette, CA, and Ana and Evan Berkland of Elk Grove, CA; and her sister, Helen Barth and her husband, Gerald of Forest City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oscar; two sisters, Cora Jacobson and Margaret Johnson; and two brothers: Omer and Orvis Lillevik.
