RUTHVEN -- A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Jane Smith was held Monday, June 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Clem Currans officiated.
Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Marianne Susanne Koberlein was born Nov. 17, 1946, in Bamberg , West Germany, to Carl and Paul Koberlein. She attended Catholic school in Bamberg, graduating from high school in 1965. Following high school, she worked as a CNA for several years.
In 1973, Sept. 9, Marianne was united in marriage to Howard Smith in Schweinfurt, Germany. After returning to the United States Marianne became an American citizen in 1978 in Fairbanks, AK at which time she changed her name to Mary Jane.
In 1990 Howard and Mary retired from the military and returned to the Ruthven area. Mary worked at many places in Palo Alto county. She was employed at the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School, Ruthven Community Care Center, and SNC in Emmetsburg. During this time she went to school for her CNA license and Medical Manager endorsement.
Mary was very active in the Ruthven American Legion Auxiliary and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mary passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 66. She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Koberlein; her mother, Paula Muller; sister, Renate Sauerwein; and father-in-law, John R. Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Smith of Ruthven; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and LB Hurley of Curlew; three grandsons, John, Benjamin and Oliver Hurley of Curlew; a sister, Erika Straub of Bamberg, Germany; and her mother-in-law, Sophie Smith of Ruthven.
