It's always tough to lose lose by a run, Such was the case Monday night when Emmetsburg's E-Hawks came up a run short in a 2-1 loss to Spirit Lake in Lakes Conference play. Emmetsburg moves to 1-6 in league play and 6-6 on the season.
The E-Hawk defense started Monday's contest out on a solid note, giving up a walk to the Indians in the top of the first, but forcing Spirit Lake to leave their runner stranded. But the E-Hawks would come up with a leadoff walk from Aaron Bird that was followed by a bunt single from Dillon VanOosbree. A fielder's choice on Jake Jackson's at bat put Bird out at third before Greg Wesley struck out and Taylor Wegner grounded out, leaving VanOosbree and Jackson looking for a way home to end the first inning.
The two teams traded outs in the second and in the top of the third, the Indians scored a run with two out off a double. Trailing the Indians 1-0, the E-Hawks would go down an out before Aaron Bird was walked. Dillon VanOosbree was walked and a walk was issued to Jake Jackson to load the sacks. Greg Wesley stepped up and reached on an error at short that allowed Bird to cross the plate, but the trio was stranded when Taylor Wegner struck out and Joe Jackson was put out to end the inning.
The Indians got a runner on base only to leave him waiting in the top of the fourth. Luke Jackson led off the bottom of the fourth with a fly ball to right field, but Jake Kibbie singled. With Kibbie on board, Nick Chapman struck out looking and Aaron Bird was called out on strikes to end the fourth.
Spirit Lake was retired in order in the fifth inning, but Emmetsburg also went down in order. In the top of the sixth, the Indians got a leadoff single and a walk, but with two outs, the Indians' Paul Brown was thrown out stealing home to end the threat. Emmetsburg put Joe Jackson on base off a base hit and with two out, Jake Kibbie was hit by a pitch, but the two E-Hawks were left waiting when Zach Anderson grounded out.
To lead off the seventh frame, Spirit Lake got a leadoff single and followed that up with a second base hit and a single to score for a 2-1 lead.
Starting with the top of the order, Aaron Bird and Dillon VanOosbree both went down swinging, but Jake Jackson was hit by a pitch to get on base. A walk was issued to Greg Wesley for the potential game-winning run, but Taylor Wegner would be struck out swinging to end the contest in the heartbreaking loss.
For the E-Hawks, Taylor Wegner went five and a third innings, allowing one earned run off two hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Jake Jackson relieved for an inning and two thirds, allowing one earned run off three hits with two strikeouts.
