Eureka High School in Eureka, California has announced their first ever "Family Award" honorees to be inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. Mike Erickson, Doug Erickson, Jolyn Mason and Alan Erickson, children of Julian and Jean Erickson of Rodman, will be honored at an induction ceremony before the Eureka homecoming football game this October. The formal announcement was made at a fundraiser in March.
The Hall of Fame was initiated in 2008. The induction of the family celebrates the time and effort that they put forth as athletes, students and parents to make Eureka a quality institution.
Julian "Julie "Eric" Erickson was born and raised near Rodman and graduated from Rodman High School in 1951. He is the son of lifelong farmers, Ana and Elmer Erickson.
ERICKSON - The family of Julian Erickson, originally of Rodman, will be inducted into the first ever “Family Award” Athletic Hall of Fame in Eureka, California.
Julian excelled in athletics at Rodman. After high school he attended college and served two years in the U.S. Army from 1957-1958. He taught school and coached at Gillet Grove and Sutherland High Schools before moving to Eureka, California, where he coached at Eureka High School for over twenty years.
Along the way, he married Jean Berberich of Royal, Iowa where they raised four children, Mike, Doug, Jolyn and Alan. Mike is a teacher and head basketball coach at Santa Rosa High School. Doug is an administrative assistant at UCLA with team basketball responsibilities. Jolyn Mason is an English teacher in Sacramento High School and Alan has played professional basketball in Australia for many years.
Julian Erickson has been an avid golfer through his adult years, returning to Iowa during the summer to play in many golf tournaments. He is well known among the local golfers and has received high praise for his spirit and friendly competitiveness. He organizes his own, annual "Berberich Family Tournament" at Sioux Rapids Golf Club and a food and awards evening in Web, Iowa.
All four family members, along with other inductees, will serve as Grand Marshals of the homecoming parade. They will also be introduced at the induction ceremony with a list of their accomplishments. Family and friends are invited to attend the event.
