Fun on the Fourth in Soper Park

Fun on the Fourth in Soper Park is a family event, hosted by the community of Emmetsburg. The day is filled with activities for young and old, all beside the shores of Five Island Lake.

Bring the youngsters to the park at 9 a.m. with their big wheels and tricycles. Races will be held on the basketball court, hosted by VFW Post #2295.

Water balloon toss is next on the agenda, with teams from youngsters to adults participating in this thrilling event. VFW members will also host foot races on the green space at the park. The VFW will provide pop for the children and Emmetsburg Care Center will have drink boxes for the little ones.

Team games will also be held Thursday.

Palo Alto County Peace Officers Association will host a Co-Ed Kick Ball Tournament at the Field of Dreams Complex in Emmetsburg. The games start at 9 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded.

FUEL?Emmetsburg is hosting an Independence Day Bags Tournament and Sand Volleyball, with both starting at 10 a.m.

The Bags Tournament involves two-person teams. Individuals without a team mate will be assigned one that day. Each team gets four bean bags to throw, with scoring to 21 points. For information, contact Michael Jacobson at 712-7900-1452.

Sand Volleyball teams will take to the courts at 10 a.m. in Soper Park. Team rosters must include men and women on the six person team. During play, at least one-half of the players on the court being female. 100-percent payback. For information, contact Brian Rouse at 712-260-7731.

Members of VFW Post #2295 will raise the flag and offer a 21-gun salute at 1 p.m. Emmetsburg Mayor, Myrna Heddinger, will give her Fourth of July Address. Emmetsburg Municipal Band will perform its final summer band concert of the season.

Vendors will be in the park, providing food and treats. FUEL?Emmetsburg will be offering ice cream treats. Enjoy the afternoon in the park and at the beach.

GLH?(Great Lakes Hybrids)?band will perform at 7 p.m. along the south shore of Five Island Lake.

Fireworks over Five Island Lake begin at dusk.

"We want to thank all who responded with donations toward the fireworks," said Chamber Director Deb Hite. "This is a great American tradition that we enjoy each year."

Residents wishing to donate toward fireworks can stop at the Chamber Office of Emmetsburg City Hall.

Emmetsburg Retail Association will host a barbecue Friday, July 5, in Soper Park when Hawkeye FFA Alumni Tractor Ride comes through Emmetsburg. ERA members will be serving burgers prepared by Palo Alto County Cattlemen from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The public is invited for lunch and to view the tractors at the park. Tractors will be set up around Soper Park.

The tractor ride originates in West Bend, traveling through Cylinder, Emmetsburg and Mallard before returning to West Bend.

There is a lot of activity in Emmetsburg this holiday weekend for families to enjoy.

Celebrate in Cylinder

Residents of the Cylinder community invite everyone to celebrate our country's independence holiday in Cylinder this Thursday.

Join the crowd for Fourth of July events in the afternoon and evening, with fun for all ages.

Inflatable slides and games will be set up in Cylinder Park. Join in the water balloon games, sack races, softball and sand volleyball.

The "kids train" is back by popular demand. Children will be taken on rides around town. There will be a dunk tank to dunk your favorite Cylinderite.

Palo Alto County Cattlemen's grill will be cooking steaks and burgers, along with chips and drink.

Bring a lawn chair and spend the twilight listening to music.

The big Cylinder Fireworks display will take off at dusk.

Cylinder's July 4th Celebration is completely funded through donations.

Emmetsburg Kiwanis Flight Breakfast

Emmetsburg Kiwanis' Annual Flight Breakfast is Sunday, July 7, at the Emmetsburg Municipal Airport. Pancakes, omelets, sausage, juice and coffee will be served from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free to pilot in command. EGQ?Unicom: 122.8

Plane rides will be available and there will be aircraft on display. The public is invited to attend. For information, call 712-852-4849.

Celebrate in West Bend

Celebrate the holiday this weekend in West Bend, with activities Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 5-7.

Friday's highlight is an FFA Alumni Tractor Ride. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at West Bend International. Riders will tour Palo Alto County throughout the day.

Palo Alto County Cattlemen will be grilling downtown West Bend from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The Rude Band will perform at the Street Dance, beginning at 9 p.m.

The Independence Day Parade is Saturday, July 6. Parade line up begins at 9:30 a.m. with the parade at 10 a.m. Food stands open at noon, west of the school.

At 12:30 p.m. there will be carnival games, Fern Valley 4-H Petting Zoo, Special K'z the Clown, inflatable rides, 9-hole mini golf and Bingo.

West Bend Fire Department Water Fights start at 2:30 p.m. Kids will participate in Liberty Games, starting at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Pedal Tractor Pull.

West Bend-Mallard Drill Team will perform at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Cow Pie Bingo is always exciting. The auction begins at 6:30 p.m. Mindy's Miles Bike give-away is at 8 p.m.

Crazy Keys Dueling Pianos will perform at 8:30 p.m.

Fireworks will be shot off at dusk.

Throughout the day there will be free swimming at the West Bend swimming pool, and West Bend Ford's Corn Box.

The weekend concludes with the Chamber Breakfast on Sunday morning. Chris Cakes will be served at the West Bend Community Center from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
