Ruthven Hosts Bully Bullhead Weekend

"Blazing Trails for the Future" is the theme for Bully Bullhead Weekend 2013 in Ruthven. This year's annual celebration that features over 60 events for people 1 year to 101 years of age will be held on Friday, July 5, through Sunday July 7.

Three new events on the schedule include a Flag Football tournament at the football field at noon on Saturday, the WooWoo Wine-fest at Centennial Park and Pool at 3 p.m. Saturday and the Bullseye Trap Shoot at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Bill Grange farm a mile south of Ruthven.

BBW kicks off over 60 events on Friday morning with the BBW Tractor Ride Registration begins at 7 a.m. The ride will take off towards Gillette Grove where the morning coffee and rolls will be held at Dead Heads Motorcycle shop. The noon lunch will be at the Pizza Ranch in Spencer with riders returning to Ruthven around 3 p.m. Other Friday events include at 4 p.m. the free community hot dog feed sponsored by the Iowa State Bank. Entertainment at this event will feature The West Benders. They will start around 4:15 to 5:15 or so.

More Friday events include the 4th through 8th grade 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Centennial Park & Pool and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at 6 p.m. near the Catholic Church. The night is capped off with a large street dance featuring the ever popular "Judd Hoos Band" downtown on Gowrie by Bully's Bar and Grill. This is also the annual fireman's dance with all proceeds going to the local fire department.

Set the alarm clock early on Saturday as things get going early with the BBW Fishing Contest at 7 a.m. Other events include the city-wide garage sales, a bake sale at the Methodist church, antique tractor and machinery show, mini doughnuts, history slide show and so much more! The 5K, 10K and Fun Run event will be held at Huston Park on Lost Island Lake at 8 a.m. and the slow pitch softball tournament will get underway at the Ruthven ball fields also at 8 a.m. The BBW bike ride will kick off downtown at 9 a.m. with all proceeds going towards the Lost Island trails project.

Other Saturday morning events include free inflatables and games at the Iowa State Bank sponsored by the Ruthven Community Care Center at 9 a.m., library book sale beginning at 9 a.m., and the Mason's Turkey Fillet & Brat feed located on the green space of the Wild Wood Flower Gift Shop starting at 11 a.m.

The Ruthven-Lost Island Railroad Express will also be giving free train rides for the kids. Don't forget the flag football tournament at the football field.

At noon, the BBW Car Show kicks off at Cricket Park on Gowrie by the railroad tracks. Of course, one event everyone loves is the large parade! The BBW parade will start at 1:30 p.m. leaving from the south end of the football field and traveling the same parade route as years past. After the parade, the Lost Island Nature Center will be hosting a family fun event that will be entertaining for everyone and the Pony Express will be giving pony rides near the American Legion at 3:30 p.m.

Co-ed 3 on 3 basketball tournament at 5 p.m. at Centennial Park and Pool. The WooWoo Wine-fest will feature wine vendors from around the region and everyone 21 or older will truly enjoy wine tasting while moseying around looking over crafts.

The evening will conclude with another street dance featuring Jen-X as she performs in the "Jon Hepperly Band" 9 p.m. downtown by Bully's. The large fireworks display will be held at 10 p.m. at Lost Island Lake.

Sunday morning kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at the American Legion with a pancake, egg and sausage breakfast and Legion Auxiliary's Bake Sale and White Elephant Sale. Join the group at 10 a.m. at the Bill Grange Trapshooting grounds just a mile south of Ruthven. The Bullseye Trap Shoot competition will be held with four classes of shooting; youth female and male and adults male and female. All proceeds from this event will go to the high school trap team; the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Bullseyes.

Co-Ed volleyball tournament kicks off at noon also at the softball fields. At 1 p.m., the Progressive Organ Recital begins at Zion Lutheran Church, proceeding to each church in the community and finishing at the Lost Island Lutheran Church. There will be an ice cream social and maidrite supper, 4 to 7 p.m. at Lost Island Lutheran.
