The Mallard Garden Club met Friday, June 21 at the home of Debbie Rouse with 6 members present. Roll call was taken and a Butterfly report was given. Species included the Monarch, Painted Lady and Morning Cloak.
For new business, members reported on the status of the melon plants started from seed distributed to each member at last month's meeting.
Carol Hurley presented a lesson on raising cucumbers. She recommended starting in peat pots and if possible, use a trellis. They are members of the gourd and melon families and were introduced to this country by Christopher Columbus. They can be used in soups and desserts.
Guests then gave their best use for cucumbers. Members most often sliced them in a salt brine and added vinegar just before eating or canned them making Dill, Sweet or Bread and Butter Pickles.
