Palo Alto County Supervisors gave approval to a grant application for the county's Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management program to purchase a mower during action at Tuesday's meeting of the Supervisors.

County Sanitarian Joe Neary briefed the Supervisors on the grant application, which is being submitted to the Iowa Department of Transportation's IRVM program.

"We had gotten bids a while back for a tractor and mower for the IRVM program," Neary explained, but at budget time we put the plans to buy them on hold. In the meantime, we found out that the DOT has money available for the native seed that we've been using and that they also had grant funds available for mowers."

Neary noted that he had visited with Greg Petersen of Petersen Farm Equipment in Ruthven to see if the bid price for the mower was still good, and after finding that it was, he planned to apply to the DOT for the grant funds to buy the mower.

"The bid price on the mower, a bat-wing with right-hand wing, was $16,200 from Petersen," Neary said. "As far as the tractor, we have some money set aside now for one, but we will look into that later."

Neary then asked the board to approve the grant application for the $16,200 mower, and received a unanimous vote of support for the application from the supervisors.

Palo Alto County Engineer Joel Fantz reported that the long-awaited railroad crossing replacement projects in Graettinger were slated to begin this coming Monday, Sept. 16. "We will be working closely with the City of Graettinger on this project, as well as with the Union Pacific and PRO Coop," Fantz noted. "We will also be applying dust control on the gravel north out of town and past the residences on that road since it is going to be a detour route during the work. This is something we have done in the past on detour routes and the homeowners along those roads have appreciated it."

Board Chair Ron Graettinger agreed with Fantz. "That will help a lot along there, and might even hold up into the harvest season, too."

Fantz also presented the bid bond for Dixon Construction for the recently awarded contract for a bridge replacement project on county road B63 west of Mallard. With the bond acceptance, Fantz reported that preliminary talks with the contractor indicated they wanted to start work as soon as possible on the project.

In a final item, Fantz reminded the board of the Informational meeting on the Silver Lake byway road project, which will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Ayrshire Community Center.

In other business, the board granted a permit to Iowa Lakes Rural Electric Cooperative for the construction of an overhead electrical line along 500 Ave. and crossing 280 Street in Independence Township. The Supervisors also approved the monthly reports of the County Recorder and County Veterans Affairs and also set 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13 in the boardroom as the date and time to canvas the School Board elections.
