“Then Feed Just One” Helps Alleviate World Hunger

September 19, 2013
Emmetsburg News

"Few of us have ever had to worry where our next meal was coming from or when that next meal would come," says Dr. Ted Ellis of Emmetsburg. "When I was with Mission Honduras LeMars Medical team in north central Honduras in March 2012, we witnessed true poverty and hunger. We were in the Mantana de la Flor area where one in five children do not make it past age five. Malnutrition is a major part of the problem. You can help alleviate that problem."

Then Feed Just One is a nonprofit, mobile food packaging program based in LeMars which assists various groups in alleviating world hunger.

Then Feed Just One, Palo Alto County Packing Event is Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds.

“THEN FEED JUST ONE” Packing Event was held one year ago at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds. Over 500 volunteers worked shifts throughout the day, packing 19,836 bags of high quality, highly nutritious and tasty meals to send around the world to help fight world hunger. Volunteers will package high quality, highly nutritious and tasty meals to send around the world to help fight world hunger. The meals the volunteers package are fortified chicken-flavored casserole mix with seven dried vegetables and over 20 vitamins and minerals. The meals were created by a team of food scientists to fight malnutrition and starvation. Each 13.8-ounce package contains six one cup meals.

The meals packed could likely go to the three poorest countries in the western hemisphere: Haiti, Guatemala, and Honduras.

How can you help? About 200 people are needed for each 90-minute shift. Each helper pays $30 to pay for the food products bagged and then does a job from setting up, putting rice in the bag, sealing the bag, or boxing, and refreshing supplies.

Individuals can also help by contributing dollars for scholarships to sponsor youth groups to participate. Any person or group from Palo Alto County and the surrounding area can participate.

Palo Alto County Packing Day will be held at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Shifts available are: 8:30 to10 a.m., 10 to 11:30 a.m., and 11:30- a.m. to1 p.m. Please arrive 20 minutes before your shift.

"I challenge you to push us to go longer!" said Ellis. "Gather a church group, scout group, civic group, or your neighbor and help fight world hunger."

At the 2012 Palo Alto County Packing Event, 500 volunteers packaged 19,836 bags. With six meals per bag, that equaled 119,016 meals.

Then Feed Just One name originates from a quote from Mother Teresa: "If you can't feed a hundred people, Then Feed Just One".
