October 1, 2013
Emmetsburg News

Palo Alto County Health System (PACHS) received a Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, for their support of their employee's service personnel and families. Tom Manley, Vice Chair of ESGR in Iowa, and Bob Seigel and Dr. Ted Ellis, ESGR volunteers, presented the award to PACHS administrator, Desiree Einsweiler on Tuesday, September 24.

The ESGR works with American employers to develop and promote a culture which all business support and value the military service of their employees. Currently the Guard and Reserve comprise almost half of our nation's total military force making them a critical part of our national security.

Palo Alto County Health System was nominated for the Patriot Award by Julie Beehler, ARNP, a provider at the Family Practice Clinic in Emmetsburg. In her letter of recommendation, Julie commented, "When I was informed of my husband's deployment to Afghanistan, I communicated with my employer, Mary Lee Orr and Desiree Einsweiler, of the need to be home more with my children. They have been extremely flexible in allowing me to leave early and to decrease my hours during his time away. As a nurse practitioner in the clinic, my fellow co-workers have also been very willing to help as well."

The ESGR seeks to educate employers on how to support those in the Guard and Reserves. They assist service people with re-employment issues during and after their service in the military. During their military outreach, the ESGR encourages those in the service to talk with their employers about issues and support they need while in the service. They also ask service people to recommend employees who support them and their families for recognition.
