James H. Crane 1933-2013

A Mass of Christian Burial for James H. Crane of Algona will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church Algona. Concelebrants will be the Rev. Edward Girres and the Rev. Eugene Murray.

Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

James H. Crane, son of Clark and Catherine (Hartgenbush) Crane, was born Sept. 14, 1933 in Ida Grove. After graduating from Ida Grove High School, Jim attended Iowa State University where he was a member of Alpha Tao Omega Fraternity.

In 1953, Jim volunteered to serve his country during the Korean War and was a member of the Army-1st Armored Division. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1957.

Jim accepted a position with Brenton Bank of Palo Alto County and while living in Emmetsburg, he met his future wife. On June 24, 1961, Jim was united in marriage to Elaine Cole at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. This union was blessed with a daughter and son.

Jim was employed with Brenton Bank until his retirement in 1995. He served as a bank officer since 1960 and became actively involved in real estate lending in 1963. Jim furthered his education by attending graduate and post graduate school at the University of Wisconsin. He also attended Sheshinoff School of Banking in Austin, TX where he was trained in High Performance Banking. Jim was elected President of Brenton Bank of Palo Alto County in 1975.

Jim was always a big promoter of Emmetsburg and the county. He was active and served on countless boards and organizations locally and statewide, some of which included the Iowa Lakes Community College Foundation, Emmetsburg Community Economic Preparedness Program serving as Chairman, Industrial Prospect Committee, Industrial Development Board, Lakes Area Chairman of Iowa College Foundation, affiliate member of Alex Sheshinoff and Company and board member and treasurer for the Iowa Finance Authority. Jim was a co-founder and charter member of the Emmetsburg Toastmasters and had served on Iowa Lakes Community College Advisory Boards. He was a member of the Governor's Task Force on area college funding, a Charter member and treasurer of Main Street Community Theatre and a past board member of the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce. Jim was a very active 50 year member of Rotary International where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and currently a member of the Algona chapter.

Jim was a devoted member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona and a past member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Jim was the recipient of the Governor's Volunteer award in economic development and was also named Citizen of the Year in Emmetsburg.

Jim earned his private pilot's license, along with an instrument rating and was very active in aviation and the preservation of general aviation airports. He served on the Emmetsburg Airport Commission and was an active member of AOPA.

Jim passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 at the Muse-Norris Hospice House in Mason City at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Catherine Crane; his wife, Elaine on Dec. 24, 2012; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Crane.

He is survived by his children, Jeanne and Darrell Mullenbach of Urbandale, and Steven and Natalie Crane of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Megan, Sara and Grant Mullenbach and Andrew and Jack Crane; sisters, Margaret (Jack) Lyons of Yankton, SD and Marilyn Crane of Omaha, NE; brother, Robert "Bob" Crane of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Mary Hannon of California; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
