Republicans Nominate Candidate For District 2 Supervisor Spot

October 17, 2013
by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

Steve Finer of Emmetsburg will be the Republican candidate on the ballot to fill the unexpired term of District 2 Palo Alto County Supervisor.

The selection was made Tuesday night when the Palo Alto Republican County Convention reconvened. Six delegates, repre- senting Emmetsburg Wards 1 and 2, were eligible to vote for a candidate.

Two candidates were in the running. Steve Finer was nominated by Brian Campbell, with a second from Denise Haack. Craig Merrill of Emmetsburg was nominated by Marge Merrill, with a second from David Rouse.

Steve Heldt of Emmetsburg made a motion that nomination cease. He added, "I think both these guys would be great candidates. I was contemplating running previously. I think these two would do an excellent job so I pulled myself out -- maybe in the future sometime."

Each candidate stated his qualifications to serve:

Steve Finer: A partner of Jensvold Motor Co., he serves as General Manager and President. He was first elected to Emmetsburg City Council from Ward I in 2001.

Finer posed the question, "Why am I electable? I've won three contested races for Ward 1?City Council; half of that is in the Supervisor District that I want to run for. County and city governments not just Emmetsburg, all the towns in?Palo Alto County, need to work more closely together... All elected officials need to be more open minded about working together for the good of the people they serve."

Craig Merrill: A lifelong resident of Palo Alto County. He owns and operates a farming business with his brother, and also has a trucking business.

"These businesses have taught me how to budget and be fiscally responsible. Because of farming, I have knowledge of drainage and tile. Because of trucking, I have a general understanding how roads and traffic network together.

"I will approach this seat with common sense and look at both sides of the issue before making a decision. I will spend the money with the taxpayer in mind. I will listen to your concerns and give you a voice."

Kirk Haack spoke on behalf of Steve Finer.

The six voting delegates (John Spies, Paul Osterman, Peggy Osterman, Greg Hoyman, Denise Haack and Aaron Phillips) cast paper ballots. It took only one round of voting to name the candidate.

"I appreciate everybody's support in the upcoming election," said Finer.
