John M. High 1947-2013

Funeral service for John M. High of Emmetsburg was held Monday, Nov. 4, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Clem Currans was the celebrant.

Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

John Matthew High, son of Walter and Monica (Cullen) High, was born Nov. 20, 1947, in Emmetsburg. He began his education at St. Ellen's Catholic School and then attended Emmetsburg Catholic School. John continued his education at Iowa Lakes Community College in the Horticulture Department.

John farmed with his father and later on his own for several years. He was also employed at the Palo Alto County maintenance garage and worked for many years at the Redwood Caf for Rose and Al McFarland.

John was a devoted volunteer and gave of his time whenever he was needed. He and his sister, Jane began Make A Difference Day in 1999, where individuals were encouraged to help clean up the city. They were awarded the Citizen of the Year Award in 2000. John watered all of the flowers and plants each summer that were set out in front of businesses and he drove the courtesy car at the Palo Alto County Hospital.

Due to health problems, John had recently moved to Lakeside Lutheran Home, where he passed away on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, James Lee High; and his brother, Paul High.

He is survived by his sister, Jane High of Emmetsburg; his sister-in-law, Kathy Ann High of Omaha, NE; a niece, Kathy Lyn High of Omaha, NE; a nephew, Joseph High and his wife, Sara of Wichita, KS and their son, Matthew Joseph High; cousins, Bev (Drew) Thompson of Emmetsburg, Donna (High) Haack of Mallard, Carolyn (High) Henderson of Emmetsburg, Bob Drew of Salt Lake City, UT, and Jim High of Blue Earth, MN; as well as other relatives and many friends.
